Abstract
In this 4,150-word review essay, I highlight key points from Pope Francis' 2013 apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), and as I go, I connect certain points he makes with the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955). Because Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, it strikes me as worthwhile to call attention to these connections. But I also connect certain points that the pope makes with relevant works by other authors, including the Canadian Jesuit philosopher and theologian Bernard Lonergan and the American business consultant Olivia Fox Cabane.
