Abstract
Erica Peterson will speak about the community-based initiative to nominate the Greater Chequamegon Bay and Apostle Islands Region of Lake Superior as a National Marine Sanctuary. Lake Superior waters in the area around Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands contain significant natural and cultural marine resources. This is still an intact ecosystem. All 40 species of fish that occur in Lake Superior, occur in the Bay. Even fish that spawn as far away as the St. Louis River near Duluth migrate to the Apostle Islands to feed. We have one of the few naturally reproducing populations of sturgeon in the Lake. The area is also rich in archaeological resources like shipwrecks and Native American cultural resources. A NMS would provide new opportunities for research, education, and conservation to protect these resources while providing additional economic opportunities.
