Abstract

Description

Musical performance has played an integral role in forming and disseminating culture throughout history. The architecture of a performance space greatly influences how people experience the arts. In this research project, I developed a series of in-depth case studies of composers and performance spaces, including opera houses, concert halls, and theaters. When studying specific performance spaces, I researched the relationships between spaces, types of performances held there, changes in architecture over time, and how architecture affects the performer’s and audience’s experience. I studied spatial arrangements, technological advancements in theater design, and social implications of a space.
