Abstract

Description

This commentary emphasizes the critical role of membership organizations in supporting the governmental public health workforce by setting professional standards, assuring training, and advocating for their members. Despite receiving historic one-time funding during COVID-19, the public health system now faces an impending "funding cliff" and potential political backlash toward austerity. These organizations must proactively demonstrate the value of public health spending to policymakers and simultaneously work to professionalize and address the serious issues of burnout and shortages within the workforce.
