Abstract

Adrianne Greenbaum, Professor of Flute at Mount Holyoke College and pioneer of the klezmer flute tradition, is a nationally acclaimed flutist and clinician, performing on historical instruments of the 18th and 19th centuries. Her classical training and career ranks among the finest flutists of her time. As a classical musician she has performed as soloist and orchestral musician in all of New York’s major concert halls and in many major cities of the US. She has appeared with such prestigious orchestras as New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival, the Berlin Ballet at the Met, the Period Orchestra of the Fairfield Academy, and for many years performed with the New York City Ballet Orchestra. As a klezmer she is founder and leader of her flute-based klezmer ensemble, “FleytMuzik” and the “Klezical Tradition” klezmer ensemble. Her newest recording “Farewell to the Homeland: Poyln” received reviews of note for both reviving the presence of klezmer flute as well as for the newly discovered music itself. A film documentary about this music from the Frand Folio, “The Miracle of the Music” will feature FleytMuzik’s performances of the music. Her current projects are performing her own solo klezmer suite with orchestra, researching klezmertunes that “travelled” the same path as her paternal family - from Poland to Sweden - as well as being a select member of an 11-piece women’s ensemble from North America, titled “Soul Songs: Women of Klezmer”. She has recently added more composing to her activities, hoping that a tune or to two will remain as a staple in the klezmer repertoire after having been awarded a finalist prize in the Brazilian “Kleztival” for her new suite titled “A Gute Lebn” (A Good Life) and a new March titled “Suferetsky March” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the women’s right to vote amendment.
