Abstract

In my 4,100-word review essay "William Potter's 2004 Book on Melville's Clarel (1876), and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I discuss in detail Potter's book Melville's Clarel and the Intersympathy of Creeds. In it, Potter discusses the 1991 edition of Melville's Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land. In addition, I use various aspects of the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955) to critique certain points of Potter's discussion of Melville's Clarel.
