This is a report on a study by DNR-Division of Waters (DOW) to investigate the hydrology of the catchment area of the karst springs that supply water to the Lanesboro State Fish Hatchery (LSFH) in Fillmore County and to remediate the primary sediment input point to the aquifer. The hatchery had a long-standing problem with sediment in its springs after precipitation runoff events. DNR and U of MN staff completed two fluorescent dye traces from a previously unknown stream sink on an intermittent branch of Duschee Creek to the LSFH springs. These traces demonstrated a rapid, less than 10 hours, time of travel. Subsequently, plans were developed and funding obtained to seal the stream sink and re-route the stream branch away from the sealed stream sink. The project's goal was to protect and improve the water quality of the hatchery springs. This report details those efforts.
