Item Building Environmental Youth Leadership: A High-school Service-learning Curriculum(University of Minnesota Extension, Regents of the University of Minnesota, 2006) Meyer, Nathan, J.; Meyer, Rebecca, L.The Building Environmental Youth Leadership Team curriculum was made possible, in part, through funding from Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program. The guide first defines and details key components of the service learning process. Subsequent lesson plans describe how to help groups of high-school-aged youth develop teamwork and a service mission, logistical plans, and actions to accomplish their service mission. These lessons were developed and piloted by Extension educators over the course of two years working in collaboration with youth and staff from the Northern Pines Girl Scout Council and Duluth ISD 709.Item An Evaluation of Project SUCCESS Programming(Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement, 2012-10) Kundin, Delia; Michlin, Michael; Daugherty, MarthaProject SUCCESS (PS) is a youth-development organization working with students in public schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. For over 18 years, the program has worked to motivate students to set goals, plan for the future, and pursue their dreams. The program seeks to accomplish these goals by collaborating with teachers, facilitating in-class workshops with students, and providing access to theater experiences and other special programs and services (e.g., one-on-one assistance, college tours, school performances, and Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) adventures). In August 2011, PS contracted with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) to conduct an evaluation of its program. During the 2011-2012 school year, evaluators focused on building a foundation of evaluation activities that can be expanded on in future years. The purpose of the evaluation was to gather information to help program staff better understand how the program impacts students and teachers. This information is expected to help guide guide further exploration of program effectiveness.Item Leadership Matters Online: Technology for a Hybrid Course(St. Paul, MN: University of Minnesota Extension, 2012-10) Herman, Margo; Olson, Carrie; Vogel, EricLeadership Matters Online was developed in 2011-12 as a signature course for the Extension Center for Youth Development funded through the Minnesota Department of Education. The course is a hybrid online course with three modules, including three live webinars, pre-recorded sessions, breakout chat rooms, interactive phone calls, as well as self-paced learning. We piloted some innovative interactive learning using technology tools, including Voicethread, Mindmeister and GroupZap. The course was piloted in March 2012 with 16 participants. Evaluation data from 13 participants (two peer reviewers and 11 course participants) was collected by the Youth Work Institute and guided revisions to the course content to be offered again late October 2012. The Moodle course site uses custom designed template formats that provide visual appeal and easier navigation. UMConnect break out rooms during the webinar allow for more extensive conversation between participants. Global Premier phone connections assure the integrity of the phone lines which is often a detraction in online webinar courses. The poster will feature screen shots of the Moodle templates as well as the Mindmeister, Voicethread and Groupzap tools.Item Youth Aspirations: Imagining and Navigating Futures in Higher Education(2019) Tzenis, Joanna AThis guidebook takes a new approach to preparing youth for college. Rather than focusing on grades, ACTS, or financing, the activities and program suggestions in this guidebook help young people envision having higher education in their future and help them begin to take steps toward aspiration achievement that include relying on supports, navigating barriers, and reimagining what is possible for them. At its core, this guidebook is about fostering the belief among young people that college is for them (i.e. they belong) and it is within their reach.Item Youth Aspirations: Imagining and Navigating Futures in Higher Education (2nd Edition)(2020) Tzenis, Joanna AThis guidebook takes an alternative approach to preparing youth for college.
