Item Sidelined by Mono?(2009-09-18) Silva, JonathanInfectious mononucleosis is a disease that causes fever, severe fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes, sore throat and spleen enlargement. It is important that athletes who participate in a strenuous sport with a risk of injury discontinue activity while affected with the disease due to fear of splenic rupture. The time athletes need to be away from participation is largely subjective but athletes should be at least one month from onset, afebrile, well hydrated, and without a palpable liver and spleen.
