Item An interdisciplinary exploration of the treatment gap in self-injurious behavior in intellectual and developmental disabilities(2024-04) Roberts, CarolineThis is an exploratory multi-paper dissertation on the topic of treatment access for self-injurious behavior (SIB) in intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). In the introduction I orient the reader to the relevant history of science and methodological approach. Then, in three papers I harness the power of experiential knowledge and interdisciplinarity through reflexive thematic analysis and knowledge translation. In Paper 1, A qualitative analysis of family caregiver experiences accessing treatment for self-injurious behavior in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, I explore the experiences of family caregivers interacting with providers to access treatment for SIB in IDD and present a working model of treatment pathways. In Paper 2, Interdisciplinarity and self-injury: Toward an inclusive research and treatment paradigm, I explore the possibility of an interdisciplinary study of self-injury in individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. In Paper 3, Stakeholder beliefs: An interdisciplinary exploration of the treatment gap in self-injurious behavior in intellectual and developmental disabilities, I consider the specific role of the beliefs of caregivers, researchers, and clinicians in treatment access. I conclude with a synthesis of the three papers, their shared contribution, implications for research and practice, limitations, and future directions.Item Retrospectively purchasing ebooks to amplify diverse voices and perspectives at the University of Minnesota Libraries(2022-01-20) Carter, Sunshine J; Clarke, KL; Grant, Malaika; Marsolek, Wanda; Nelsen, KatherineItem Transforming the University: Preliminary Recommendations of the Task Force on Collaborative Research(University of Minnesota, 2006-03-27) Lawrenz, Frances; Paller, Mark S.The University must: • enhance the value of collaborative research and foster a culture in which it can flourish • provide incentives and recognition for collaborative work • develop mechanisms for bringing scholars together to promote the synergy provided by collaborative work • develop, recruit, retain, and provide opportunities for highly talented researchers to lead and administer important collaborative projects • support educational and training opportunities to make collaborative research understood and accessible to all participants • publicize internally and externally the important findings and outcomes of collaborative workItem Transforming the University: Preliminary Recommendations of the Task Force on Graduate Reform: Discipline Evolution(University of Minnesota, 2006-03-27) Ekker, Stephen C.; Garner, Shirley NelsonThe Discipline Evolution Task Force identifies the following five recommendations as having the greatest potential for transforming the University commensurate with its Strategic Positioning goals: • Establish a named and high-profile institute, modeled after the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University... to support interdisciplinary scholarship at the University of Minnesota. • Create internal faculty exchanges whereby faculty members work in a department or program other than their own for a semester or two.... • Establish a program similar to the faculty exchange program for graduate students to enable them to develop interdisciplinary expertise.... • Seed and, when appropriate, provide long-term support to new and transformational research initiatives that bring together teams of highly talented faculty and students.... • Implement meaningful systems for assessing existing centers, including the expectation that new and existing centers will close after five years unless there is a cogent rationale to continue them....
