Item Cannabis Spaces, Relationships, and Relajos: Queer and Trans Chicanx Feminisms Grounding Cannabis Histories and Futures(2024) Ordonez, MagalyCannabis Spaces, Relationships, and Relajos prioritizes the experiences of Chicanx and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities that have made current legal cannabis spaces possible. The dissertation examines historical and contemporary cannabis culture in Los Angeles (L.A.), California, to understand how queer of color cannabis histories, relations, and spaces refuse subversion to a capitalist cannabis industry by centering care, cannabis education, and political advocacy. It hypothesizes that Chicanx/Latinx communities across L.A. foster landscapes of political and cultural resistance within and beyond the limits of cannabis legality. By analyzing cannabis spaces and relationships through queer Chicanx feminist archival, ethnographic, and autoethnographic methodologies, my emphasis on gender and racial cultural cannabis histories in current discussions of cannabis legality reveal how cannabis policies are used to oppress racialized, gendered, and queer communities, even in states trying to repair the harm caused by the criminalization of cannabis. This dissertation addresses the historically ingrained racism and homophobia while also proposing alternative ways of imagining cannabis culture. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach contributes to the emerging field of Critical Cannabis Studies that has largely focused on privileged white heterosexual men. Joining Critical Cannabis Studies, Queer of Color Feminisms, and Chicanx Studies, my dissertation illustrates that 1) cannabis spaces are complex social, cultural, and political instances created by people who engage with cannabis, 2) LGBTQ+ cannabis relationships give insight to the ways legality and criminality impact everyday queer communities of color, and 3) racialized communities resist state oppression by creating alternative cannabis relationships and spaces, which can inform more equitable cannabis policies and urban futures.Item Essays in International Trade(2023-07) Phillips, PaulThis dissertation consists of three chapters, and contains analysis of trends in international trade along the spatial and dynamic dimensions. In the first chapter, I review recent papers relevant to my areas of study, and highlight some areas which I believe the recent literature to be overlooking. The second chapter uses a static trade model and 2018 data on a panel of 197 metropolitan statistical areas to estimate import penetration rates for cities across the U.S. Results from this chapter show that more densely populated metropolitan areas are more exposed to foreign imports than cities with a lower population density, but are not necessarily more adversely affected by an increase in tariffs because compared to more spread--out areas they have a greater ability to substitute locally made goods for imported goods. The third chapter is my job--market paper, and constructs a multi-sector dynamic general equilibrium model of trade between the United States and the rest of the world to investigate why the pandemic affected services trade more adversely than goods trade, in contrast to trade patterns during and after the 2008 financial crisis. Different parameters in the model represent the different channels through which trade would have reacted to the two downturns, and I calibrate these values to match trade and gross output data. I find that trade frictions play the biggest role in explaining services trade; decreasing costs of conducting trade in services helped prevent losses in services trade during the financial crisis, while increasing trade frictions decimated services trade during the pandemic. A decline in consumer preferences for goods drove the losses in goods trade during the financial crisis, while the absence of such a decline limited the losses in goods trade during the pandemic. A brief analysis of consumer welfare suggests that policymakers concerned about a pandemic-like situation should focus on reducing barriers to trade rather than stimulating demand.Item Holocene Paleofloods And Their Relevance To Flood Mitigation, Risk Assessment, And Policy.(2020-04) Hefner, AmandaPaleofloods are past floods that occurred without being recorded by direct hydrological measurement. Paleoflood evidence can tell us about older, and often much larger historic flooding events than those of the instrumental record. For the past 40 years, paleoflood hydrologists have made the argument that geological or botanical flood evidence can help us better understand the true risks of extreme floods. However, because paleoflood studies are typically presented as individual works for single rivers, it is not known how often this kind of work produces information about floods that are equal or larger than the flood-of-record in conventional hydrological gage records. In my research, I created a new synthesis of all available paleoflood case studies on river systems in the U.S. spanning all available proxy records during the Holocene. My synthesis compared the largest paleoflood event in an area against the flood of record reported by the nearest stream gage, and also evaluated the relevance of paleoflood hydrology to natural hazards research. In order to be included in my analysis, studies had to have taken place on a river system in the continental U.S. during the Holocene, and also had to report a variable of flood magnitude. In the strong majority of cases (70%), Holocene paleoflood events are larger than the largest flood as recorded by instrumental river gages. In the most extreme case, a paleoflood event on Elk Creek, SD had a magnitude 12 times larger than the flood of record. While there is great potential for using data from paleoflood studies in flood frequency analyses, paleoflood hydrologists do not have a standard approach to reporting their results.
