Item Analysis of the Proposed Mill Towns Trail(1998) Ringold, JenniferItem The Economic Impact of Corn Rootworm Resistant Maize in Minnesota from 2003-2012(2016-03) Peterson, ChristinaAn ex-post cost/benefit analysis of corn rootworm traits in the Minnesota corn seed market is performed using data from the introduction of corn rootworm traits in 2003 through 2012. Yield impacts, price premiums, and additional cost effects such as insecticide spending, crop insurance discounts, environmental impacts, and convenience factors are quantified and analyzed. Multiple linear regression models are created for yield and pricing over this time period, and products containing single and multiple corn rootworm traits are differentiated in the models. The results are used to estimate the realized cumulative financial impact, from the corn grower’s perspective, of corn rootworm traits in Minnesota during this time frame.Item Essays in Industrial Organization(2015-06) Miller, KeatonIn two essays, we examine several problems in industrial organization. In the first essay, we study the effectiveness of partially-privatized Medicare by estimating the costs that private firms face when providing care equivalent to that of the public sector. In contrast to previous studies, we take a dynamic approach, driven by the idea that consumers face large switching costs. We find that private firms face higher costs than the government after adjusting for patient characteristics and generosity of benefits. The second essay focuses on the effectiveness of U.S. merger policy by studying the acquisition behaviors of cable telecommunication companies. We construct a novel dataset of acquisitions in the cable industry from 2000-2012 and find the Hart-Scott-Rodino disclosure threshold only affects firm behavior when acquiring firms with overlapping geographic coverage areas.Item Solid Waste Transportation Systems: A Case Study of Fridley, Minnesota(Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, 2009-05-20) Meyer, KatieThe City of Fridley has interest in the transportation of solid waste and requested a study to identify solid waste transportation system options that are presently used in surrounding communities. This paper analyses three transportation systems, identifies options for the City of Fridley, and outlines the process that must be followed in order to change Fridley’s current system. To gather information on solid waste transportation systems, thirteen communities were surveyed, including first and second-ring cities. Further, this study will highlight impacts of the current transportation system and reasons for why Fridley may look to change their transportation system including street decay, noise and air pollution, and safety concerns. Lastly, a cost-benefit analysis of each transportation system was developed and used as the basis for recommendations to the City of Fridley.
