Item First data on Trichoptera fauna (Insecta) of streams and ponds of Vostok Bay Basin (Peter the Great Bay, Primorye Territory).(University of Chicago Press Jounrals, 2013) Vshivkova, T. S.; Flint, O. S.; Holzenthal, R. W.; Kjer, K. M.; Frandsen, P. B.; Thomson, R. E.; Egorov, A. B.Trichoptera fauna of streams and ponds of Vostok Bay Basin (Peter The Great Bay) was unknown up to now. Due to collections of the CRDF-FEBRAS 2011-2012 international expeditions an annotated list of caddisflies inhabiting this area was prepared. The list is included 56 species from 37 genera and 21 families. The data on biogeographical distribution of the species are given.Item New Neotropical species of the genus Austrotinodes Schmid (Trichoptera: Ecnomidae)(Magnolia Press, 2010) Thomson, Robin E.; Holzenthal, Ralph W.Six new species of Austrotinodes Schmid (Trichoptera: Ecnomidae) from the Neotropics are described: A. abrachium (Brazil), A. belchioris (Brazil), A. boliviensis (Bolivia), A. cressae (Venezuela), A. longispinum (Brazil), and A. taquaralis (Brazil). Illustrations of male genitalia are provided. These additions bring the total world fauna of Austrotinodes to 55 species.Item A new species and new records of Oxyethira (Trichoptera:Hydroptilidae) from Minnesota(University of Chicago Press, 1993) Monson, Margot P.; Holzenthal, Ralph W.Males of a new species of microcaddisfly, Oxyethira (Holarctotrichia) itascae, (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae) from the Lake Itasca region of northern Minnesota are described and illustrated. This represents the first new species of Trichoptera described from the State in nearly twenty years. Fifteen other Oxyethira species are known from the State, including 0. (Dampfitrichia) verna Ross and 0. (Oxyethira) ecornuta Morton, new records for Minnesota and the United States, respectively.Item New species and records of Hydroptilidae (Trichoptera) from Venezuela(Pensoft Publishers, 2012) Thomson, Robin E.; Holzenthal, Ralph W.Eight new species of Hydroptilidae (Trichoptera) from Venezuela are described: Acostatrichia digitata sp. n., Hydroptila cressae sp. n., Metrichia botrychion sp. n., Ochrotrichia spira sp. n., Oxyethira bettyae sp. n., Oxyethira quiramae sp. n., Oxyethira redunca sp. n., and Rhyacopsyche shorti sp. n. New country records for Venezuela of 2 additional species, Neotrichia feolai Santos & Nessimian, 2009 and Oxyethira picita Harris & Davenport, 1999, are also provided. Illustrations of male genitalia are provided with each description.Item Order Trichoptera Kirby, 1813 (Insecta), Caddisflies(Magnolia Press, 2007) Holzenthal, Ralph W.; Blahnik, Roger J.; Prather, Aysha L.; Kjer, Karl M.The taxonomy, diversity, and distribution of the aquatic insect order Trichoptera, caddisflies, are reviewed. The order is among the most important and diverse of all aquatic taxa. Larvae are vital participants in aquatic food webs and their presence and relative abundance are used in the biological assessment and monitoring of water quality. The species described by Linnaeus are listed. The morphology of all life history stages (adults, larvae, and pupae) is diagnosed and major features of the anatomy are illustrated. Major components of life history and biology are summarized. A discussion of phylogenetic studies within the order is presented, including higher classification of the suborders and superfamilies, based on recent literature. Synopses of each of 45 families are presented, including the taxonomic history of the family, a list of all known genera in each family, their general distribution and relative species diversity, and a short overview of family-level biological features. The order contains 600 genera, and approximately 13,000 species.Item Phylogeny and revision of the Neotropical genus Grumichella Müller (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae), including nine new species and a key(Oxford University Press, 2016) Calor, Adolfo R.; Holzenthal, Ralph W.; Froehlich, Claudio G.The systematics of the Neotropical caddisfly genus Grumichella Müller (Leptoceridae: Grumichellinae) are reviewed. Diagnoses, descriptions and illustrations are provided for four previously described species, G. aequiunguis Flint, 1983, G. flaveola (Ulmer, 1911), G. pulchella (Banks, 1910) and G. rostrata Thienemann, 1905, and nine new species: G. blahniki sp. nov. (Peru), G. boraceia sp. nov. (Brazil), G. cressae sp. nov. (Venezuela), G. jureia sp. nov. (Brazil), G. leccii sp. nov. (Brazil), G. muelleri sp. nov. (Brazil), G. paprockii sp. nov. (Brazil), G. parati sp. nov. (Brazil) and G. trujilloi sp. nov. (Venezuela). The monophyly of the genus is corroborated (16 synapomorphies) and the phylogenetic relationships of its included species, based on analysis of 66 adult, larval, and pupal characters, are inferred as (G. aequiunguis ((G. boraceiae (G. leccii, G. parati)) (G. rostrata ((G. flaveola, G. pulchella) (G. muelleri, G. paprockii)) (G. jureia (G. trujilloi (G. cressae, G. blahniki)))))). A taxonomic key to the males of the species is presented.Item A revision of the Neotropical caddisfly genus Leucotrichia Mosely, 1934 (Hydroptilidae, Leucotrichiinae)(Pensoft Publishers, 2015) Thomson, Robin E.; Holzenthal, Ralph W.A revision of Leucotrichia (Trichoptera, Hydroptilidae) is provided, including a generic diagnosis, illustrations, a key, and descriptions of males. A total of 43 species are treated, 13 described as new: Leucotrichia angelinae sp. n. (Venezuela), L. denticulata sp. n. (Mexico), L. dianeae sp. n (Costa Rica), L. fulminea sp. n. (Ecuador), L. hispida sp. n. (Costa Rica), L. kateae sp. n. (Venezuela), L. pectinata sp. n. (Ecuador), L. procera sp. n. (Brazil), L. repanda sp. n. (Venezuela), L. rhomba sp. n. (Costa Rica), L. riostoumae sp. n. (Ecuador), L. sidneyi sp. n. (Venezuela), and L. tapantia sp. n. (Costa Rica).Item Three new species of Helicopsyche von Siebold (Trichoptera: Helicopsychidae) from Brazil(Magnolia Press, 2016) Holzenthal, Ralph W.; Blahnik, Roger J.; Calor, Adolfo R.Three new species of Helicopsyche subgenus Feropsyche (Trichoptera: Helicopsychidae) from southern and southeastern Brazil are diagnosed, described, and illustrated: Helicopsyche angeloi sp. nov. (Holotype male deposited in MZSP: Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo States), H. guara sp. nov. (Holotype male deposited in MZSP: Minas Gerais and Santa Catarina States) and H. lazzariae sp. nov. (Holotype male in MZSP: Paraná State). The first two species are similar to H. cipoensis Johanson & Malm, 2006, and H. timbira Silva, Santos & Nessimian, 2014, in having similarly shaped inferior appendages. However, the new species differs in the morphology and distribution of setae on the inferior appendages and tergum X. Helicopsyche lazzariae sp. nov. is unlike any other described species in the subgenus Feropsyche because of its broad deltoid-shaped inferior appendage and absence of a basomesal process on the inferior appendage. Characters important for diagnosing and describing new species of Helicopsyche (Feropsyche) are discussed. Finally, an updated checklist of the 23 species recorded for Brazil is presented.
