Item Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea(2009-05-04) Turgasen, SarahAntibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is an important cause of morbidity, mortality and cost in hospitalized patients. Recent RTC’s and meta-analyses have shown that administration of a probioticcontaining drink during and after antibiotic treatment may be a cost-effective way to prevent AAD.Item Data and analyses files for "Evidence for Complex Interplay between Quorum Sensing and Antibiotic Resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa"(2022-09-26) Sikdar, Rakesh; Elias, Mikael H; mhelias@umn.edu; Elias, Mikael H; Elias Research Lab, Biotechnology Institute, CBSThis data set contains the experimental data, corresponding analysis files and final and intermediary figure files used in the manuscript titled "Interference in microbial signaling highlights the complex relationship between quorum sensing and antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa" and is intended to be made publicly available for readers and reviewers. It contains the data files from BioTek HTX/Epoch2 Microplate reader for Pseudomonas aeruginosa growth with lactonases/AHLs in Biolog Phenotype MicroArrays(TM) PM11-PM20 and additional replicate experiments done with Pseudomonas aeruginosa growing in Biolog IF-10A media with antibiotics/antimicrobial compounds and lactonases/AHLs. It also contains qPCR data from Thermo Scientific StepOnePlus(TM) Real Time PCR system for assessment of transcription levels of Pseudomonas aeruginosa folA and folP genes. Additionally, all associated and annotated analysis files generated in Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism are included. Analysis data from Caenorhabditis elegans killing assays are also included. All the intermediate and final figures that are used in the manuscript are provided as Microsoft PowerPoint files for easy visualization of the workflow and processing.Item Doxycycline Prophylaxis for Preventing Lyme Disease after a Deer Tick Bite(2009-09-18) Kramer, ChristinaAfter a deer tick bite, one dose of the antibiotic, doxycycline, is effective in preventing Lyme disease. Doxycycline should be given if you have had a deer tick attached for 72 hours or more. If the tick has been attached for less time then doxycycline is not needed because it is very unlikely that the Lyme disease bacteria would have been transmitted to you. Doxycycline should only be given if it was a deer tick that bit you. For doxycycline to be effective, it should be given within 72 hours of removing the tick.Item E-supplement to: Efficacy of antibiotic and non-antibiotic interventions in preventing and treating necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens: a systematic review(2022) Bueno, Irene; Ricke, Isabel; Hwan, Haejin; Smith, Emily; Nault, Andre; Johnson, Timothy; Singer, Randall S.Item Lyme Disease Prevention(2008-09-02) Bantle, AnnePatients in Minnesota are often bitten by ticks, and may be worried about their risk of Lyme disease. This brochure provides information on how to avoid tick bites, how to recognize Lyme disease, and when antibiotics are needed.Item Measurement of Antibiotics in Water and Sediment: Determining Minnesota's Antibiotic Footprint(2020-05-22) Frankson, Lara E; Arnold, William A; arnol032@umn.edu; Arnold, William A; University of Minnesota, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- EngineeringAntimicrobial resistance is considered to be one of the greatest global public health threats of the 21st century. The discharge of antibiotics into the environment may increase antimicrobial resistance as well as disrupt proper ecosystem functioning. Thus, evaluating the antibiotics present in the environment as well as the contributing factors to their presence in the environment will provide invaluable information for improving water quality and protecting human and ecosystem health. This dissertation investigates the presence of antibiotics in water and sediment in both wastewater treatment effluent and agricultural animal affected areas throughout Minnesota. This is to provide a fine scale as well as a broadscale approach with multiple samples at each site at sites across Minnesota. Additionally, a snapshot of the antibiotics present and long term trends of antibiotics in the environment are investigated through water and sediment samples, respectively.Item Total Joint Replacements and Dental Work: What to Consider when Considering Antibiotics(2008-03-31) Plocher, LizThis is a pamphlet designed to help patients and providers decide if antibiotic prophylaxis is appropriate for the patient with a total joint replacement.
