Item Henry A. Murray on Melville's 1852 Novel Pierre, or, The Ambiguities; and Walter J. Ong's Thought(This version was not previously published., 2021-08) Farrell, ThomasIn my 4,150-word review essay "Henry A. Murray on Melville's 1852 Novel Pierre, or, The Ambiguities; and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I highlight Dr. Murray's lengthy "Introduction" to the 1949 edition of Melville's 1852 novel Pierre, with special attention to Dr. Murray's discussion of the mutually intense but short-lived platonic relationship between Herman Melville (1819-1891) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). In addition, I highlight certain aspects of the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955).
