Item Access to Public Transit and Its Infuence on Ridership for Older Adults in Two U.S. Cities(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2009) Hess, Daniel BaldwinGrowth in the population of older adults (age 60 and above) in coming years will challenge urban planners and transportation managers to provide travel options that support autonomy. To investigate barriers that older adults experience in using public transit, this research explores associations between older adults who do and do not ride fixed-route public transit and their neighborhood walking access to buses and trains. The research tests whether or not the distance between a trip origin or destination and a transit stop or station is a significant factor in predicting frequency of transit ridership. Data from a survey of older adults in California and New York is used to regress older adults’ frequency of riding public transit against explanatory variables, including demographic and socioeconomic variables, access and mobility measures, and neighborhood characteristics. Findings suggest that self-reported walking distance to transit has a statistically significant influence—in San José, California, but not in Buffalo, New York—in predicting transit ridership frequency. Drivers are more sensitive to walking distance than nondrivers. Models estimate that in San José, each additional five minutes in perceived walking time to transit decreases transit ridership frequency by five percent for nondrivers and by 25 percent for drivers. Older adults are likely to ride transit more often if they are male, nonwhite, and low income.Item Access, Aging, and Impairments Part A: Impairments and Behavioral Responses(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2009) Schmöcker, Jan-DirkThis article introduces vol. 2, no. 1 issue of Journal of Transport and Land Use.Item Adult Day Care: Its Effects on Families of Elderly Disabled Members.(1984) Zimmerman, Shirley L.Item Assessing the extent of transport social exclusion among the elderly(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2009) Titheridge, Helena; Achuthan, Kamalasudhan; Mackett, Roger; Solomon, Juliet“Social exclusion” is a concept that has become increasingly prominent in the UK and else- where in the last ten years. Social exclusion occurs as a result of a series of problems that prevent people from being able to participate in activities that are considered normal in their society. Some of these problems are related to issues of accessibility. This paper outlines work carried out in the context of the AUNT-SUE (Accessibility and User Needs in Transport in Sustainable Urban Environments) project to develop and model an appropriate set of accessibility benchmarks for older people. Results confirmed that the travel patterns of older people are very different from those of the average person in the UK and that it was necessary to tailor accessibility benchmarks to the characteristics of this group. A set of benchmarks was developed based on ability to undertake different types of activity. these benchmarks are currently being incorporated into AMELIA, a GIS-based tool for assessing the effect of different policy actions on accessibility. Issues that have arisen include how to model the myriad micro-level cir- cumstances that affect the mobility of older people. Some initial analysis has shown that these details can make a substantial difference to the assessment of the accessibility of a destination. Examples are drawn from St Albans in Hertfordshire, UK.Item Benefit-Cost Analysis for Intersection Decision Support(Minnesota Department of Transportation, 2007-10) Corbett, Michael; Levinson, David; Zou, XiThe Intersection Decision Support (IDS) system is designed to assist drivers on stop-controlled low-volume rural roads choosing gaps when confronted with busy multiple lane divided-highways, without affecting traffic on the high-volume road. The hope is, that by providing better gap guidance, fewer crashes (and fatalities) will occur. This research develops a framework for analyzing such a new, and presently under-specified technology, and illustrates that framework by comparing that with more conventional engineering approaches, as well as a "do-nothing" base case. The results show that the IDS System may be an effective tool to reduce crash rates at various intersections. More research is needed to address reliability and stability issues, and in determining how cost- effective of a solution the IDS System is compared to other "traditional" alternatives.Item Carver County Baby Boomer Readiness Assessment Tools(Minneapolis: Center for Urban and Regional Affairs, 2009) Guthrie, Andrew; Cedarleaf Dahl, ErikItem Considering Attachment Issues in Permanency Decisions.(Minnesota Center for Survey Research (MCSR), 1998) Egeland, Byron; Erickson, Martha Farrell; Wattenberg, EstherItem Courses and Programs of Study in the Field of Aging: Student Guide.
