Created in the early 1970s by Dr. Philip Uri Treisman at the University of California, Berkeley, the initial focus was African-Americans in a calculus course seeking a doctoral degree in mathematics. Since then it has been used with a variety of student groups. Students earn academic graduation credit for paired-courses (content and learning strategies). In the 1990s, co-developed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City by Dr. Deanna C. Martin and Robert A. Blanc. Since then, it has been implemented in a wide variety of places such as Eastern Europe and South Africa.
