    Virtual Colonoscopy: An Alternative Way to Screen for Colorectal Cancer

    Although optical colonoscopy has been shown to be effective in detecting colorectal cancer and thereby prevent deaths, a large percentage of patients are unwilling or unable to undergo the procedure. Virtual colonoscopy provides a safe, effective alternative to screen for colorectal cancer that clinicians can use to improve compliance, and hopefully save more lives in patients that have an average-risk of colorectal cancer and do not have symptoms of colorectal cancer.

    Primary CT colonography and optical colonoscopy screening strategies resulted in similar detection rates for advanced neoplasia, although the numbers of polypectomies and complications were considerably smaller in the CT colonography group. These findings support the use of CT colonography as a primary screening test before therapeutic optical colonoscopy.
