Item Analysis of the acceptance of park-and-ride by users: A cumulative logistic regression approach(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2019) Huang, Kai; Liu, Zhiyuan; Zhu, Ting; Kim, Inhi; An, KunPark-and-ride (P&R) schemes are an important way of increasing the public transport mode share, which relieves the negative impact caused by excessive automobile usage. Several existing studies have been conducted in the past to explore the factors that can influence the acceptance of P&R by travelers. However, quantitative analyses of the pertinent factors and rates of traveler choice are quite rare. In this paper, the data collected from a survey in Melbourne, Australia, is used to analyze the acceptance of P&R by travelers going to the central business district (CBD). In particular, we explore the influence that specific factors have on the choice of travel by those who are currently using P&R. The results indicate that the parking fee in the CBD area, travel time on public transport, and P&R transfer time affect traveler use of P&R. A quantitative assessment of the impact of these three factors is conducted by using a cumulative logistic regression model. Results reveal that the P&R transfer time has the highest sensitivity while public transport travel time has the least. To maximize the use of P&R facilities and public transport, insights into setting parking fees and designing P&R stations are presented.Item Australia - Sustainable horticulture crop production(2010-11-28) Cutting, JaredItem Exploring property value effects of ferry terminals: Evidence from Brisbane, Australia(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2017) Tsai, Chi-Hong (Patrick); Mulley, Corinne; Burke, Matthew; Yen, BarbaraProperty value effects of linear river ferries that service multiple stops in cities are under-explored. The Brisbane CityCat, CityHopper, and CityFerries combine to form a ferry system with 24 terminals. A geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach is used to determine property value effects of the system. Cross-sectional property data is used in combination with a set of neighborhood variables derived from 2011 census data, spatial feature location, and transport datasets (roads, busway and train station locations) for the city. The preferred global model had a good fit and showed expected signs for all parameters, showing that property prices tended to decline with distance from ferry terminals, when controlling for other variables. For every kilometer close a location is to a ferry terminal, there is an expected price increase of 4 percent on average, across the study area. The GWR local model also had good fit and suggested property value gains around specific terminals. Visual inspection suggests that locations where more ferry-oriented development opportunities have been taken in recent decades are the sites with the greatest positive property value effects. Land-use mix is an important component of walkability that can be measured in a number of ways. Many land-use mix measures require fine-scaled land-use data that are not always available, especially when analyzing walkability across larger geographic extents. This study investigated the feasibility of calculating a national walkability index in Australia, using metropolitan Melbourne as a case study. The study focused on the dual challenges of selecting an appropriate measure of land-use mix and identifying an appropriate land-use data source. We calculated an entropy land-use mix measure with three different Australian land-use datasets. Our comparison of the resulting land-use mix measures highlighted the differences in the land-use datasets and led to our conclusion that none of the three land-use datasets was appropriate for use in a national land-use mix measure. Therefore, we also developed two new exploratory “intensity” measures of land use — daily living and local living — that were able to be calculated nationally with readily available data. Modelled associations with transport walking and comparisons with the entropy land-use mix measures indicate that these new measures were appropriate for assessing national land use in a national walkability index.Item The impact of charity and tax law/regulation on not-for-profit news organizations(The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford and the Information Society Project, Yale Law School, 2016) Picard, Robert; Belair-Gagnon, Valerie; Ranchordás, SofiaItem Planning for cycling in local government: Insights from national surveys in Australia and New Zealand(Journal of Transport and Land Use, 2022) Babb, Courtney; McLeod, Sam; Noone, ConorDespite a broad consensus that cycling can address a range of transportation issues, many countries have struggled to institute measures to increase cycling participation. Even for cities that have achieved marked progress, there remains a gap in making cycling a truly normative mode of transportation. The practical problem of translating research and converting policy vision into broad-based cycling participation has become an increasingly central focus of international cycling scholarship. To examine the challenges of practically planning for cycling, we focus on the role of local government and report on a survey of all urban and major regional local governments in Australia and New Zealand. By analyzing results across the two countries, we diagnose challenges faced by practitioners in implementing measures to support cycling. Key findings suggest there is support among local government officers and stakeholders for cycling to play an increased role in daily transportation, yet this support is much more mixed at the implementation stage of cycling plans, policies, and infrastructure projects. These findings indicate a pressing need to better equip local government practitioners with tools and knowledge to overcome barriers to providing for cycling, particularly in increasingly politicized and complex contexts.
