    Drone Swarming and Active Gimbal Control for Flow Field Imaging

    A drone system was developed to meet the swarming and automation needs of the Grand-scaleAtmospheric Imaging Apparatus, to be used for particulate surveying and multiview imaging of large scale flows. This application and the range of flight missions it involves required a powerful reconfigurable drone system that could be modified for different operating conditions and evolving mission needs. Such a system was designed; simulated; built; tested; and improved based on test performance, stakeholder feedback, and research use. Its construction involved a variety of state of the art open source and custom drone tools to allow a good fit to project needs while retaining maximum flexibility and extensibility to both adjacent and more complex use cases as the system continues to evolve.
