Item Oral history interview with Barbara H. Hornbach(Charles Babbage Institute, 2015-12-10) Hornbach, Barbara H.Barbara Hornbach attended Vassar College where she worked with pioneering computer scientist Winifred Asprey and led the local student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. After her graduation in 1969, she began a career in software development and management with Bell Laboratories in Naperville, Illinois. The interview describes her technical work at Bell (on 4ESS and 5ESS) as well as participation in affirmative action committees and workshops within Bell. During 1980-84, Hornbach chaired a standardization sub-committee within CCITT dealing with human-machine interface standards for telephone switching systems. Sloan Foundation award B2014-07 “Tripling Women’s Participation in Computing (1965-1985).”Item Oral history interview with Don Norman(Charles Babbage Institute, 2020-01-28) Norman, DonThis oral history, with one of Human Computer Interaction’s (HCI) and Cognitive Science’s foremost pioneers Don Norman, is part of a CBI project done for ACM SIGCHI. It briefly addresses Norman’s early life, before focusing on his graduate education and prolific career. This includes Norman’s discussion of his mentors and influences, career launch, leadership in Cognitive Science, and his intellectual and organizational contributions to HCI as field and ACM SIGCHI as an organization (the field and SIGCHI’s evolution). He recounts his leadership of UCSD’s Design Laboratory, his Chairing the UCSD Psychology Dept., educational philosophies, research management, and collaborations (with George Mandler, Danny Bobrow, and many others). He also touches upon his consulting, and his time working in industry (Apple, HP). Finally, the interview offers contexts on some of his principal publications, including his seminal book The Psychology of Everyday Things (POET), which along with his other scholarship developed and propelled forward a science of design.Item Oral history interview with Donn B. Parker(Charles Babbage Institute, 2003-05-14) Parker, Donn B.Donn Parker, a renowned expert on computer security, begins by discusses his education and early programming and managerial work at General Dynamics and the Control Data Corporation (CDC). The bulk of the interview concentrates on developments and contexts to Parker’s subsequent work at SRI on computer security and computer crime. This pioneering research, which was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Justice, provided Parker with the substance for a number of influential books. Parker also discusses the emergence of the computer security industry, IBM’s contributions to the field, and computer security legislation. He concludes by addressing aspects of the contemporary computer security situation, best practices to prevent breaches, and his formation of the International Information Integrity Institute (I4).Item Oral history interview with Eugene H. Spafford(Charles Babbage Institute, 2013-11-12) Spafford, Eugene H.This interview with computer security pioneer Eugene Spafford spans from his early education to the near present (2013). He discusses how he came to focus on computer security as a research field and his long and ongoing career as a faculty member, editor-in-chief (Computers & Security), center director, and educator. A substantial portion of the interview addresses his work in founding and leading a premier center for computer security research—COAST Lab (Computer Operations, Audit, and Security Technology), which evolved to become CERIAS (Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security). CERIAS is the largest academic research center on information assurance and computer security and has had tremendous influence on the field from its pioneer research and education to its highly regarded symposiums and outreach. Among other topics Spafford discusses are intrusion detection research and development, Unix security, Tripwire, the Association for Computing Machinery, service to the federal government, and the importance of a sense of humor. Neumann(Charles Babbage Institute, 2013-06-03) Neumann, Peter G.In this interview, computer security pioneer Peter G. Neumann relates his education at Harvard University (A.B. in Math, S.M. and Ph.D. in Applied Math), including an influential (to his perspective and career) two-hour long meeting/discussion as an undergraduate with Albert Einstein (discussing “complexity” and other topics). The vast majority of the interview addresses the many facets of his highly influential career in computer security research. With regard to the latter, this includes discussion of his work at Bell Labs and extensive involvement with MULTICS security, and his subsequent four-decade (and continuing) career as a research scientist at SRI International. He tells of his work and leadership with the Provably Secure Operating System (PSOS), research and writing on risks (including moderating the ACM Risks Forum), insider misuse and intrusion-detection systems (IDES, NIDES, EMERALD), and his current work on two DARPA-funded projects that builds on key lessons of the past to design and develop secure/trustworthy computer systems. He also relates the computer security research infrastructure and how it evolved, as well as comments on a number of other topics such as the major computer security conferences and the range of perspectives of researchers in the computer security research community. Denning(Charles Babbage Institute, 2013-04-10) Denning, Peter J.;This interview focuses on Peter Denning’s pioneering early contributions to computer security. This includes discussion of his perspective on CTSS and Multics as a graduate student at MIT, pioneering (with his student Scott Graham) the critical computer security concept of a reference monitor for each information object as a young faculty member at Princeton University, and his continuing contributions to the computer security field in his first years as a faculty member at Purdue University. Because of an extensive, career spanning oral history done with Denning as part of the ACM Oral History series (which includes his contributions as President of ACM, research on operating systems, and principles of computer science), this interview is primarily limited to Denning’s early career when computer security was one of his fundamental research areas. HCI Pioneer Stuart Card discusses early education, attending Oberlin College, and helping lead its computer center, before the bulk of the interview focuses on his graduate education at Carnegie Mellon University working under Allen Newell, and his long and influential tenure at Xerox PARC. This includes his long and impactful collaboration with Newell and fellow Newell doctoral student Tom Moran. Newell, Card, and Moran were fundamentally important to theorizing early Human Computer Interaction, and the three co-wrote the widely used and deeply insightful textbook, The Psychology of Human Computer Interaction. Card provides an overview of his decades of work of Xerox PARC and various aspects of his research contributions to HCI models, information visualization, and information access (especially foraging theory). He moved into managing research and also relates a portion of his leadership roles at PARC and outside on important committees such as for the National Academy of Science. He briefly expresses his ideas on the early institutional history of SIGCHI and its evolution. Regarding his work at PARC, Card discusses his influential work on computer mice research at greater length. Card became an adjunct professor at Stanford University. He is an ACM Fellow and was awarded SIGCHI’s Lifetime Research Achievement Award.Item Oral history interview with Susan Dray(Charles Babbage Institute, 2020-01-28) Dray, SusanThis interview is part of a series on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conducted by the Charles Babbage Institute for ACM SIGCHI (Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group for Computer Human Interaction). HCI Pioneer and one of the founders of SIGCHI recounts her education, early career, and the founding of SIGCHI as an idea/plan in Gaithersburg 1982. She details her work in human factors on government projects and on analyzing secretaries and office processes in using newly acquired IBM computers at Honeywell’s headquarters (the development and writing of DELTA), as well as launching the first industrial users/design lab outside of the IT industry at American Express Financial Services. She also discusses leaving American Express to found Dray and Associates, one of the first HCI consultancies. Among the core topics discussed are the evolution of SIGCHI and the CHI Conference, gender and the HCI field, the relative place of practitioners and academics in HCI, and her method and roles in studying users and advising companies/organizations. She also discusses UXPA (a heavily practitioner organization focused on user experience and design), and her role in mentoring many young students and professionals (especially women) in HCI.Item Oral history interview with Susan H. Nycum discusses law school, her work managing and helping to manage major academic computer centers (at Carnegie Mellon and Stanford), her roles with various pioneering IT-related and law groups/associations (including ABA Science and Technology Section, the Computer Law Association, and the ITC Law Association), efforts with the law and computing within ACM, her influential collaborative research with Donn Parker on computer crime and computer criminals (including interviewing prisoners), and her work with law firm Chickering and Gregory.
