Item Cloquet Forestry Center arboretum larch individual tree diameter and height 2016(2019-09-26) Koenig, Benjamin; Gill, Kyle; kggill@umn.edu; Gill, Kyle; University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry CenterDuring August 2 through September 20, 2016 Kyle Gill, University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC) Manager and Research Coordinator, led an effort to sample individual tree size on larch species found in the CFC arboretum. Five different larch species were sampled, and one species had two varieties: Larix laricina, Larix gmelini, Larix dahurica, Larix gmelini var. olgensis, Larix siberica, and Larix occidentalis. The value of these data are that they are a snapshot of individual tree sizes of 139 individuals from six different larch species established using the same protocols that have been left to grow in their neighborhood for around 85 years. These data are being released now because they have been requested by a team of researchers in Maine, United States, who are compiling and analyzing individual tree from across the Great Lakes region.Item Cloquet Forestry Center automated weather station data for calendar year 2019(2020-09-23) University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center; kggill@umn.edu; Gill, Kyle G; University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center Forest Management and ResearchWeather station data for calendar year 2019 from the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center automated weather station as collected by a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger and various sensors. The automated weather station serves as a higher resolution dataset and backup for the manually-collected daily weather observations that are recorded and submitted to the National Weather Service. It also includes data from sensors not required by the NWS. Data for this dataset are collected by each sensor every 20 seconds and aggregated and recorded at the CR1000 in five minute intervals. They were downloaded and appended to the growing dataset manually by CFC staff weekly. The Direct Weather Download Protocol by CFC staff is followed to ensure datalogger data quality control steps are in place during manual data download, transfer, and archiving.Item Continuous Forest Inventory Plots for the UMN Cloquet Forestry Center(2020-07-30) UMN Cloquet Forestry Center; UMN Department of Forest Resources; lbj@umn.edu; Johnson, Lane; University of Minnesota Experimental Forests; University of Minnnesota, Department of Forest Resources, Interagency Information Cooperative; University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry CenterThe University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center is a field research and instructional station associated with the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS). Continuous Forest Inventory data has been collected for the CFC since 1959. The network of permanent forest measurement plots consists of 406 1/7 acre plots with a subset of these plots re-measured up to seven times since establishment. The last re-measurement occurred Summer 2014. The majority of the CFI plots were geolocated with a Trimble GeoXT GNSS receiver in 2014 or 2015 to obtain sub-meter precision for each plot center. Plot locations are marked in the field with a tagged center post with painted tree numbers oriented to plot center. Eight plots without precision GNSS locations are indicated within the attribute table. One plot location is missing from this dataset as it could not be relocated in the field (Plot_ID = '620'). Polygon attributes represent the current status of forest inventory records for the CFC at the end of 2021 based on episodic updates to an original 2005 cover type mapping product.
