Item Nearly 20 percent of young males are willing to purchase alcohol for underage youth(2007-09-17) Finnegan, John; Traci ToomeyWelcome to Public Health Moment from the University of Minnesota. Nearly 20 percent of young males are willing to purchase alcohol for underage youth when approached outside of a store that sells alcohol. That’s according to research by University of Minnesota epidemiologist Traci Toomey. Toomey’s study looked specifically at the practice of “shoulder-tapping” – defined here as when an underage person asks a stranger outside of a store to buy alcohol for them.Toomey says that her study found that one out of every five young males—those who appeared to be between 21 and 30 years old—agreed to purchase alcohol. With another Public Health Moment, I’m John Finnegan.
