Preliminary Bedrock Geology Map of the Eastern Part of Lake Vermilion State Park, St. Louis County, Northeastern Minnesota
(2011-08) Helm, Nick; Scott, Heather; Kilduff, Rob; Rahtz, Christine; Vial, Andrew; Young, Spencer; Mahr, Chris; Hudak, George J
This map was created by seven students of the Precambrian Research Center under the guidance of Dr. George Hudak, Senior Research Associate at the Natural Resources Research Institute and Associate Director of the PRC. The purpose of this map was to further understand the spatial and temporal relationships between the volcanic, volcaniclastic, chemical sedimentary, and intrusive rocks that make up the lithologies at Lake Vermilion State Park. This map was produced from detailed geological field mapping between August 8 and August 13, 2011. Access to the park was granted to Dr. Hudak and the PRC field mapping team by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for the purpose of geological field mapping. A trail system provided easy access to the bush and canoeing allowed for shoreline mapping. This map will be part of a larger, 1:5000 scale geological map of both Soudan Underground Mine State Park and Lake Vermilion State Park that will be available to the public in the future.
