Item Biogeochemical and food web studies in lakes large and small (2019-10-11)(2019) Ozersky, Ted; University of Minnesota Duluth. Department of BiologyMy lab studies the ecology and biogeochemistry of lake ecosystems. In this talk I will highlight three research projects that my students, collaborators and I have been pursuing over the past five years. First, I will discuss our work on the way invasive zebra and quagga (dreissenid) mussels affect thebiogeochemistry of invaded lakes and how the impacts of dreissenids change with environmental setting. I will also describe our work on uncovering the seldom-studied ecological processes that occur during the winter in small and large ice-covered lakes. The third project I will present examines environmental controls on growth of benthic algae in large lake ecosystems, including the Laurentian Great Lakes and Russia’s Lake Baikal. I will finish by discussing my plans for future research.Item Dataset for Factors Regulating Lake Periphyton Biomass and Nutrient Limitation Status Across Large Trophic Gradient(2021-05-25) Camilleri, Andrew; Ozersky, Ted; accamill@umich.edu; Camilleri, Andrew; Large Lakes ObservatoryThis data set contains results of a study on the response of Great Lakes periphyton to additions of nutrients. Nutrient Diffusing Substrata (NDS) with control, +nitrogen, +phosphorus, and +nitrogen and phosphorus treatments were deployed at 28 sites along the coast of Lake Superior, northern Lake Michigan, and Green Bay. Control NDS cups contained just 2% agar by weight while +nitrogen, +phosphorus, and +nitrogen and phosphorus treatments contained the agar and 0.5 M NH4Cl, KH2PO4, or both, respectively. Experiments were deployed between July 11-31, 2017 and retrieved 28-29 days later between August 8-28, 2017. Periphyton biomass as chlorophyll-a and ash free dry weight (AFDW) from NDS treatments is contained in the file “NDS_Chl_AFDW.csv”. Site locations and environmental parameters (water column nutrient concentrations, Kd, and chlorophyll) are contained in the file “SITES_PARAMETERS”.Item Full-year data on crustacean zooplankton and environmental parameters of Lake Superior nearshore regions(2023-02-08) Shchapov, Kirill; Ozersky, Ted; shcha001@d.umn.edu; Shchapov, KirillThis data set contains the results of a whole-year study of crustacean zooplankton communities and environmental parameters in the Lake Superior nearshore region. Five stations ('Sites.csv') were sampled throughout the year, emphasizing the winter period for zooplankton abundance, taxonomic community composition, and environmental parameters. Zooplankton abundance and taxonomic identification were made for all stations ('Zooplankton.csv'); environmental conditions are presented in file' YSI_data.xlsx.'Item Sediment mixing and dissolved oxygen and nutrient dynamics in a six week microcosm experiment containing Great Lakes macroinvertebrates(2024-05-06) Huff, Audrey H; Rigdon, Matt; Zalusky, John; Katsev, Sergei; Ozersky, Ted; huff0114@umn.edu; Huff, Audrey E; University of Minnesota Duluth Large Lakes ObservatoryPhysical and geochemical dynamics at the sediment-water interface in a six-week microcosm experiment including Great Lakes macroinvertebrates (dreissenids, Diporeia, and oligochaete worms) with varying functional biology. Microcosms included single and multi-taxon treatments and data includes sediment mixing rate (as luminophore profiles), weekly NO2,3 and NH3 fluxes between the sediment and overlying water, weekly sediment dissolved oxygen microprofiles, and pore water NO2,3, NH3, and P profiles.Item Spring and summer 2019 seston, excretion, and tissue C:N:P data for quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in Lakes Michigan and Huron(2023-04-05) Huff, Audrey E.; Zalusky, John; Katsev, Sergei; Ozersky, Ted; huff0114@umn.edu; Huff, Audrey E.; University of Minnesota Duluth Large Lakes ObservatoryData include quagga mussel food, tissue, and excretion C, N, and P concentrations from sites throughout Lakes Huron and Michigan (including Green Bay) in the spring and summer of 2019. Samples were taken along trophic status and depth gradients. Site characteristics analyzed include site depth, seston C, N, and P concentrations, chlorophyll a concentration, water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, and mussel biomass.Item Winter and summer zooplankton community and environmental parameters data of thirteen lakes located in Minnesota and Wisconsin(2021-05-26) Shchapov, Kirill; Ozersky, Ted; Wilburn, Paul; shcha001@d.umn.edu; Shchapov, Kirill; University of Minnesota Duluth Large Lakes ObservatoryThis data set contains the results of a study on taxonomic and functional differences between winter and summer zooplankton communities in lakes across a trophic gradient. Thirteen lakes ('Sites.csv') were sampled across a large trophic status gradient for zooplankton abundance, taxonomic and functional community composition, and Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) stable isotopes in relation to environmental parameters. Zooplankton abundance and taxonomic identification were made for all stations ('Zooplankton_abundance.csv'); nutrients and C/N stable isotopes values in file 'Environmental_parameters'; lakes light conditions in summer and winter are presented in file 'Light.csv'; bulk zooplankton C/N stable isotopes are in 'Zooplankton_sia.csv' file.
