Item Building Capacity in Natural Resources Across RSDP(University of Minnesota. Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships., 2016) Kingery, Linda; Clarke, Rose; Mohr, CarynThe University of Minnesota has identified five crossdisciplinary “Grand Challenges of a diverse and changing world” that the U of M is well-placed to impact. On a regional scale, the need exists to empower communities of Greater Minnesota to develop local solutions to these Grand Challenges, specifically that of Clean Water and Sustainable Ecosystems.Item Longitudinal Survey Results from a Pilot Community Climate Communicators Program(2023-05-05) Clark, Suzanna; Roop, Heidi; Gonzales, Katerina; Mohr, Caryn; Dybsetter, Anne; Kingery, Linda; hroop@umn.edu; Roop, Heidi A; University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation PartnershipMore frequent, effective climate conversations initiated by a diversity of trusted voices can help to increase climate concern and desire for action at the community level. However, in the United States, there is a disconnect between the level of concern individuals have about climate change and the extent to which individuals talk about the issue. To help bridge this gap, the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership developed a training program aimed at inspiring and equipping local community members across Greater Minnesota with the skills and confidence to have effective conversations about climate change in their communities. This paper summarizes the programmatic activities we used to support our goals, and some reflections on the program's results. This pilot program provides a framework for future efforts that can be facilitated by Extension programs, community-based organizations, universities, and others to inspire and accelerate similar community-centered climate conversations. The data included herein are from a survey distributed to program participants at the beginning and end of the program. The survey includes questions related to participants' perceptions of climate change, confidence in communicating about climate change, and satisfaction with the program. Data are both qualitative (short answer and multiple choice), and quantitative.Item Minnesota Rural Grocery Survey(2016) Tremper, Nich; Draeger, Kathryn; Lanthier, Karen; Mohr, CarynItem The Public Value of Deep Winter Greenhouse Research and Extension(University of Minnesota Extension, 2016-10) Mohr, Caryn; Burgess-Champoux, Teri; Rice, Joshua; Schweser, GregExtension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships’ (RSDP) work on Deep Winter Greenhouses (DWGs) addresses the need for Minnesota small- and mid-scale farmers to maintain year-round production. Recent University research supported by RSDP has found promising early evidence for the environmental and financial benefits of DWGs. Interest has grown, and in 2016 RSDP launched a statewide campaign to build five DWGs based on a prototype design by the Center for Sustainable Building Research (CSBR). From 2016-19, research conducted on these DWGs will investigate how the technology can be maximized to support behavior change (adoption of the technology). RSDP is uniquely positioned to address this issue due to the connection between scholarly expertise and access to community platforms needed to test and scale emerging DWG technology. This body of work illustrates Extension’s attention to emerging needs, support of scholarship, unique position as a trusted statewide network, and potential widespread impact on Minnesota’s food system, which aligns with the Minnesota Food Charter. Existing DWG producers will be surveyed for their perceptions of the impact of RSDP DWG services, change in participant (farmer) production practices, and impacts on the broader community and Minnesota’s food system.
