The Effects Of Tpo And Tpe On Polyethylene Blends In Plastic Pipe Applications
    (2023-05) Marhula, Ryan
Currently corrugated dual walled pipes struggle from decreased hydrodynamic efficiency due to plastic deformation of the inner wall (liner). This deformation is caused when the pipe is coiled for storage or transportation. To address these issues, this study investigated various blends composed of high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and thermoplastic olefins (TPO) as potential pipe liner materials. Optimal liner blends had a decreased flexural modulus and an increased strain at break when compared to the client’s current liner blend as these will decrease plastic deformation of the pipe liner. The percent crystallinity and homogenization of these blends were also investigated with mixed results leaving future actions open. Based on our findings from processability and material performance standpoints the most promising blends were determined to be those containing TPO_2 material, LDPE and Wax_1 for the given application.
