Item Mental Health Needs Assessment for the Central School District in Norwood Young America, MN(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2016) Howard, Ellen; Linden, ErinThis project was completed as part of the 2015-2016 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with Carver County. The Central School District in Norwood Young America, located in west-central Carver County, experienced two public suicides in 2012. In addition to the suicides, students in the district reported higher-than-average mental health issues on several state assessments. Both the School District and the County were looking for ways to improve mental health services available to students. Carver County project lead Samantha Downs collaborated with two master of public health students in the Public Health Administration and Policy program to complete a community mental health needs assessment. Their research showed that students would benefit from animal-based therapy in schools, a mental awareness campaign, and a media-based campaign to promote existing mental health services. The students' final report, poster, and presentation are available.
