    Sinus Infections: The Role of Antibiotics

    The clinical diagnosis of acute rhinosinusitis is based on the common signs and symptoms, but does not identify those patients for whom treatment is justified, given the expense, risk of adverse effects, and bacterial resistance associated with unnecessary antibiotic use. Even if a patient reports symptoms for 7-10 days or symptoms that were getting better and are now worsening, antibiotics are not justified absent severe symptoms such as high fever, periorbital edema or erythema, severe headache or intense facial pain.
