A fire chronology was traced to 1650 and its role in the establishment of pine stands documented. The logging history of the park area was reviewed. Secondary successions to aspen and other seral hardwoods and shrubs have replaced most former pine stands. Such pine stands are a major scenic resource the park was created to protect. Present old-growth pine stands are largely overmature or decadent and are not being reproduced. Seed sources from old pine stands are absent or inadequate on much of the park area. Assuming a goal of reconstructing the park forest to its presettlement condition, a program of active management must replace past protectionistic management. Silvicultural measures are being tested and compared to convert present second-growth aspen stands to pine on sites formerly supporting pine types. Early results indicate that competition from aspen suckers and shrubs and heavy mortality from concentrated deer browsing are major obstacles in such conversions.Item The ecology of upland forest communities and implications for management in Itasca State Park, Minnesota(University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, 1974) Hansen, Henry L.; Kurmis, Vilis; Ness, Darwin DelbertItem The Forest of Isle Royale in Relation to Fire History and Wildlife(Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, 1973-10) Hansen, Henry L.; Krefting, Laurits W. In fact, some papers predate the organization of the College and were developed while it was the School of Forestry. One hundred and two papers are listed, with the earliest dated 1929. Not included here are many research papers by graduate students and faculty in the College of Biological Sciences and other units of the University of Minnesota, and visiting scientists. It is hoped that this bibliography will enable students and researchers as well as park managers, naturalists and others to benefit from what has been learned through this long period of research and observation. The following overview provides an insight into the major study areas. A brief description of each study area may be helpful.Item Itasca State Park related research conducted under the aegis of the College of Forestry, University of Minnesota : a bibliography.(University of Minnesota, 1987-03) Kurmis, VilisItem Occurrence and Distribution of Pine Reproduction in Itasca State Park, Minnesota(St. Paul, Minn. : School of Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1969-10-15) Kurmis, Vilis; Hansen, Henry L.Item Provisional list of synecological coordinates and selected ecographs of forest and other plant species in Minnesota(University of Minnesota, 1978-12-01) Bakuzis, Egolfs V.; Kurmis, VilisItem Reproduction Characteristics of Upland Forest Communities in Itasca State Park, Minnesota(St. Paul, Minn. : School of Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1969-10-15) Kurmis, Vilis; Hansen, Henry L.Item Tree Reproduction and Shrubs in Relation to Stand and Site Conditions in St. Croix State Park, Minnesota(St. Paul, Minn. : School of Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1970-04-15) Kurmis, Vilis; Fedkenheuer, Alvin; Grafstrom, Myron; Hesse, Richard A.Item Weighted Site Indices in Relation to Some Characteristics of the Edaphic Field of the Central Pine Section of Minnesota Forests(St. Paul, Minn. : School of Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1962-07-15) Bakuzis, Egolfs V.; Hansen, Henry L.; Kurmis, Vilis
