Item Analyzed Data Management Plans (DMPs) from Successful University of Minnesota Grants from the National Science Foundation, 2011-2014(2015-03-31) Johnston, Lisa R; Bishoff, Carolyn; McGrory, John; Storino, Chris; Swendsrud, Anders; ljohnsto@umn.edu; Johnston, Lisa RFederal funding agencies are asking principal investigators (PIs) to specify their plans for describing, storing, securing, sharing, and preserving their research data in Data Management Plans (DMPs) included with their grant proposal. This change in sponsored research is best exemplified by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which in 2010 announced that all grants submitted after January 18th, 2011 must include a one- to two-page DMP with all new proposals. In order to review the plans for how University of Minnesota researchers plan to manage, store, describe, protect, and share and preserve their data, a review instrument was created and implemented by the University Libraries in the summer of 2014. Our local study of DMPs in successful NSF grant applications from January 2011 - June 2014 was opt-in by U of M PIs and the libraries collected 182 data management plans for our study, accounting for 41% of the total number of plans solicited. The deidentified data used in our analysis and our survey instrument are presented here.Item Annual Report 2021: End of Year Highlights of the Data Curation Network(2021) Johnston, Lisa R; Narlock, MikalaThis report showcases the numerous endeavors the DCN supports, from shared curation to conducting research in Special Interest Groups, active collaborations, and education opportunities. Elements of this framework and the process used to develop it could be applied at other research institutions to advance their efforts to address the challenges they face supporting data intensive science. While approaches may differ slightly, addressing these challenges within our respective universities is critical, and perhaps a prerequisite to building and sustaining partnerships among providers of advanced research computing and fully realizing the value of our data.Item 'Creating a Data Management Plan' and Other Training Opportunities in the Library(2010-12-21) Johnston, Lisa R; Lafferty, MeghanResearchers in large academic institutions have multiple barriers to identifying available campus tools and resources for managing their research data. The recently announced National Science Foundation (NSF) data management plan requirement for all new grant applications is a prime opportunity to address those difficulties. The University of Minnesota Libraries has been developing educational and outreach programs to support researchers throughout the data life-cycle.Item Curate a data set to capture and compare curation activities across network partners(2017-02-21) Johnston, Lisa R; Carlson, Jake; Hudson-Vitale, Cynthia; Imker, Heidi; Kozlowski, Wendy; Olendorf, Robert; Stewart, ClaireItem Item Curating Research Data Volume Two: A Handbook of Current Practice(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2017-01) Johnston, Lisa RCurating Research Data, Volume Two: A Handbook of Current Practice guides you across the data lifecycle through the practical strategies and techniques for curating research data in a digital repository setting. The data curation steps for receiving, appraising, selecting, ingesting, transforming, describing, contextualizing, disseminating, and preserving digital research data are each explored, and then supplemented with detailed case studies written by more than forty international practitioners from national, disciplinary, and institutional data repositories. The steps in this volume detail the sequential actions that you might take to curate a data set from receiving the data (Step 1) to eventual reuse (Step 8). Data curators, archivists, research data management specialists, subject librarians, institutional repository managers, and digital library staff will benefit from these current and practical approaches to data curation.Item Curating Research Data: How We Do It Today and How We Might Collaborate in the Future(2017-02-27) Johnston, Lisa RAs reproducibility and data sharing emerge as key issues for academic researchers, the data management services offered by the library must grow from consultation and guidance to hands-on data curation and service. For two years the University of Minnesota Libraries have offered a robust service involving multiple data curation specialists that curate data deposited into our Data Repository for the University of Minnesota (DRUM) and appropriate subject data repositories. Data curation steps, including quality assurance, file integrity checks, documentation review, metadata creation for discoverability, and file transformations into archival formats, are value-add services that enhance digital data for long-term preservation and reuse. This talk will explore the data curation workflows and staffing in place at our institution and also highlight procedures in place at disciplinary and institutional such as Dryad, ICPSR, Yale, and the U of New Mexico. These experiences are collected in a new book titled Curating Research Data: A Handbook of Current Practice, released as an open access ebook by the Association of College & Research Libraries in January 2017.Item Data Curation Network and the Role of Librarians in Curating Data(2022-01-26) Johnston, Lisa R; Carlson, JakeItem Data Curation Network Preliminary Results(2017-01-24) Johnston, Lisa R; Carlson, Jake; Hudson-Vitale, Cynthia; Imker, Heidi; Kozlowski, Wendy; Olendorf, Robert; Stewart, ClaireItem Data Curation Network Update for the Texas Digital Library(2019-12) Johnston, Lisa RItem Data Curation Network: A curator’s perspective(2019-02) Fagan, Debra; Clary, Erin; Johnston, Lisa RItem Data Curation Network: Collaboratively Enhancing Capacity for Research Data Support(2021-12-14) Kozlowski, Wendy; Johnston, Lisa RSince its launch in 2016 the Data Curation Network (DCN) has grown into a radically collaborative network of institutions, data repositories, and organizations focused on the ethical sharing of research data. Growing beyond its original scope of shared staffing for data curation, the DCN has become a thriving community and sustainable organization that advocates for data curation and data curators and provides a unique platform for exploration and research. This presentation will highlight efforts underway in the DCN and provide project updates including research assessing the value of curation, an NSF-funded workshop to build and strengthen “data communities'' with our partners at Ithaka S+R, a multi-year NSF EAGAR grant to develop evidence-based models for campus data sharing infrastructure with our partners at ARL, a racial justice initiative to better incorporate inclusive and equitable data curation practice into our work, and the DCN strategic plan for the next three years.Item The Data Curation Network: Extending the Research Data Toolkit(2020-06) Johnston, Lisa R; Coburn, Elizabeth; Kozlowski, Wendy; Hadley, HannahItem Data Curation Network: How Do We Compare? A Snapshot of Six Academic Library Institutions’ Data Repository and Curation Services(Journal of eScience Librarianship, 2017-02-28) Johnston, Lisa R; Carlson, Jake; Hudson-Vitale, Cynthia; Imker, Heidi; Kozlowski, Wendy; Olendorf, Robert; Stewart, Claire; Hswe, PatriciaObjective: Many academic and research institutions are exploring opportunities to better support researchers in sharing their data. As partners in the Data Curation Network project, our six institutions developed a comparison of the current levels of support provided for researchers to meet their data sharing goals through library-based data repository and curation services. Methods: Each institutional lead provided a written summary of their services based on a previously developed structure, followed by group discussion and refinement of descriptions. Service areas assessed include the repository services for data, technologies used, policies, and staffing in place. Conclusions: Through this process we aim to better define the current levels of support offered by our institutions as a first step toward meeting our project's overarching goal to develop a shared staffing model for data curation across multiple institutions.Item Data Curation Perception and Practice(2017-05-24) Johnston, Lisa R; Carlson, Jake; Hudson-Vitale, Cynthia; Imker, Heidi; Kozlowski, Wendy; Olendorf, Robert; Stewart, Claire
