Item Clara Mairs: American Modernism in an International Context(2011-04-13) Johnson, AnnikaThe purpose of my research is to conduct the first comprehensive study of the life and artwork of Clara Mairs. I seek to re-consider her life and work in the larger context of women artists working in Minnesota during the depression era and into the mid-twentieth century. Outspoken and individualistic, Clara played a significant role in activating the modern and avant-garde art movements in Minnesota and was a central figure in the early phases of arts education development in St. Paul. Clara did not prescribe to the popular artistic trends of the early twentieth century and in her paintings, prints and applied arts, she continually experimented with new techniques. Playful yet psychological, monumental yet humble, Clara’s broad body of work reflects the reality, emotion and artistic happenings of her time. As with many female Midwestern artists, little attention has been given to her fascinating body of work. My research involves locating and cataloging Clara’s artworks and related documents scattered throughout various public and private collections. In piecing together the many facets of Clara’s career, my goal is to illuminate her artistic achievements and to challenge and expand the commonly accepted canon of early American modernism.Item From Ripples to Waves: Exploring Ripple Effects of the Bloomington Leadership Program(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2023) Benson, Rachel; DeBellis, Ruby; Johnson, Annika; Paschall, JasonThis project was completed as part of a partnership between the City of Bloomington and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). In 2022, the City of Bloomington launched a new strategic plan, "Bloomington. Tomorrow. Together" (BTT). The main objectives of BTT are to create a more welcoming, healthy, and economically equitable community. Bloomington project lead Diann Kirby and other staff from the City partnered with students in Peter Brown's PA 8081: Planning and Public Policy Capstone course in spring of 2023 to assess the Bloomington Leadership Program--which seeks to promote civic engagement, break down barriers, increase understanding of local government, and develop leaders in the Bloomington community--and measure its performance against the strategic objectives in the BTT. Students used Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) as a qualitative evaluation method to document and measure the impacts of the program. They found that the program strengthened community involvement, deepened engagement with local government, energized new leaders, and allowed participants to gain knowledge about their community, all of which significantly builds human and social capital for the City and ultimately creates a more welcoming community. The students’ final report and presentation are available.Item Green Infrastructure and Placemaking Strategies for the Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit Project(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2019) Bloodworth-Apolloni, Sophia; Frenette, Gina; Johnson, Annika; Seo, Seonghyun; Thompson, RyanThis project was completed as part of the 2018-2019 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with Ramsey County. The Rush Line is a future bus rapid transit line that will provide all-day, high-frequency transit service in Ramsey County between Saint Paul and White Bear Lake by way of Maplewood, Vadnais Heights, Gem Lake, and White Bear Township. The new infrastructure that will be constructed as part of the project will have storm water impacts that will need to be mitigated. Ramsey County project lead Frank Alarcon worked with students in Amir Nadav’s SUST 4004: Sustainable Communities Capstone to explore context-appropriate storm water management techniques that could enhance the aesthetics and recreational value of the areas surrounding the Rush Line’s stations and guideway. The students' final report is available.
