    Hennepin County: Climate and Resilience Department Creating a Community-Driven Climate Action Matrix

    Hennepin County’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) focuses primarily on reducing disparities in vulnerable populations while pursuing ambitious climate action goals. The County seeks to foster a supportive partnership with community-driven projects from local organizations to meet climate action and resilience goals through community engagement and outreach. In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, Hennepin University Partnership (HUP), and Hennepin County’s Climate and Resilience Department, our project’s objectives are to provide Hennepin County with an inventory matrix of local community-driven projects within the County. Our results provide Hennepin County opportunities to engage with local community-driven partners committed to climate action and resilience through projects they are passionate about.

    Moorhead Asset/Networking Mapping Project

    The Moorhead Asset/Network Mapping Project occurred over a three month period during the summer of 2021. In cooperation with Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP) and the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA), the Moorhead Asset/Network Mapping Project was able to provide the Moorhead Community Resilience Task Force with a better picture of the organizations, resources, and networks in the community through the creation of asset maps and a network connections map. The Moorhead Community Resilience Task Force consists of 21 organizations working to determine how to best increase Moorhead's resilience in the face of climate impacts. Supported by a Bush Foundation Community Innovation grant, the Task Force aims to create a community that can anticipate, adapt, and flourish in our changing world.

    This project was completed as part of a partnership between Towerside Innovation District and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). The goal of this project was to answer key questions around district assets and how Towerside can align with potential industry and partners’ goals to guide future strategic planning and attract further investment. Towerside Innovation District project lead Sabina Saksena collaborated with teams of students in Dr. Fernando Burga’s course PA 5211 to learn from other successful innovation districts, explore possible land use solutions and scenarios in Towerside, and consider climate change and racial justice implications. A final student report containing 10 posters is available.
