    Mixed Affordable and Market-Rate Student Housing: Akron Flats Proposal

    This project was completed as part of a year-long partnership between the City of Rosemount and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). Since Rosemount became its home nearly 50 years ago, Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) has served primarily as a commuter college. However, as admissions continue to grow, DCTC is moving toward offering a more complete college experience and wants to explore student housing options near the campus. At the same time, the City of Rosemount expects demand for affordable housing to significantly increase in coming years. The goal of this project was to explore the potential for the two entities to collaborate on a housing development that would include both affordable and market-rate housing geared toward students. In collaboration with city project lead Eric Zweber, a planner for the City of Rosemount, a team of students in HSG 4461: Housing Development and Management designed a proposal for a housing development that would include both affordable and market-rate housing geared toward students, complete with floor plans, marketing strategies, and financial pro formas.
