Item An Asset-based Approach to the City of Rosemount Strategic Plan: 2015-2020(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2015) Birkeland, Barnabas; Chiumento, Alyssa; Barroso, Felipe; Johnson, Claire; Lovelace, Hilary; O'Neil, Sean; Schuettler, Karl; Shardlow, George; Zweifler, ZacharyThis project was completed as part of a year-long partnership between the City of Rosemount and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). A thriving and resilient local economy is key to community development. The goal of this project was to create an asset-based strategic plan for the City of Rosemount’s future sustainable development. In collaboration with city project lead Kim Lindquist, Community Development Director for the City of Rosemount, students in PA 5512: Workforce and Economic Development conducted workforce and economic base analyses of Rosemount, held community focus groups, conducted an online survey of community members, and crafted a strategic plan with recommendations for development to build off of the City’s current assets. A final report and presentation from the project are available.Item From Point A to Point B: The Transportation and Logistics Cluster in Dakota County, MN(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2014) Chiumento, Alyssa; Evans, Parker; Foell, AndrewThis project was completed as part of a year-long partnership between the City of Rosemount and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). A thriving and resilient local economy is key to community development. Business clusters—geographic concentrations of interconnected businesses, suppliers, and associated institutions in a particular field—are considered to be beneficial for local economic development. The goal of this project was to analyze existing business clusters in Rosemount and Dakota County, identify opportunities for synergies between existing businesses and clusters, and create a marketing strategy to attract or grow synergistic businesses. In collaboration with city project lead Kim Lindquist, Community Development Director for the City of Rosemount, a team of students in PA 5590: Topics in Economic and Community Development conducted semi-structured interviews and secondary data collection to identify key industry clusters in Dakota County and identify policy recommendations to leverage the county’s competitive advantages. A final report and presentation from the project are available.Item The North Minneapolis African American Housing Opportunity Survey(2015) Chiumento, AlyssaItem North Saint Paul Economic Restructuring: Downtown Niche Analysis(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2013) Chiumento, Alyssa; Clarksen, Robert; Damiano, Tony; Johnson, Wesley; Lau, Anthony; Silburn, TashnaThis project was completed as part of the 2013-2014 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with the City of North St. Paul. The City of North St. Paul adopted a Redevelopment Master Plan to help guide development in the City, with a focus on downtown redevelopment. The City was interested in determining which businesses would thrive in the downtown. Project lead Paul Ammerman worked with students in PA 5511: Community Economic Development, to conduct a market analysis. The students made recommendations for several types of businesses and development niches that the City should seek in the downtown, including antiques, classic automobiles, museums and cultural resources, microbreweries, and woodworking. They also identified several additional strategies for downtown revitalization, including activating underutilized spaces, expanding wind and solar power, and investing in bicycle infrastructure.
