Item A comparison of four clustering methods using MMPI Monte Carlo data(1980) Blashfield, Roger K.; Morey, Leslie C.Monte carlo procedures were used to generate data sets that resembled MMPI psychotic (8-6), neurotic (1-3-2), and personality disorder (4-9) patterns. Lorr’s clumping method, inverse factor analysis, average linkage, and Ward’s method were the clustering methods compared. The solutions were found to vary in terms of misclassifications and coverage. The clustering solutions also varied as a function of different optional parameters associated with each method.Item Computer programs for performing hierarchical cluster analysis(1978) Aldenderfer, Mark S.; Blashfield, Roger K.This paper analyzes the versatility of 10 different popular programs which contain hierarchical methods of cluster analysis. The intent of the paper is to provide users with information which can be of assistance when choosing a cluster analysis program. The four dimensions which are emphasized when discussing these programs are (1) agglomeration vs. division, (2) linkage form, (3) similarity measure, and (4) hierarchical solution vs. single-rank.Item Computer programs for performing iterative partitioning cluster analysis(1978) Blashfield, Roger K.; Aldenderfer, Mark S.Eight programs which perform iterative partitioning cluster analysis are analyzed; they are discussed in terms of versatility of options, accuracy, and cost. These eight programs contain very different heuristic approaches to finding the optimal partition of a data set; the different heuristic approaches are shown to affect both accuracy and cost of clustering solutions. It was not possible to recommend any one program as generally being preferable, however, because of the striking variability in these programs and the lack of knowledge about iterative partitioning methods.Item Reply to Lorr and reanalysis(1981) Blashfield, Roger K.
