Item Polyps and elevated glucose levels(2008-04-01) Finnegan, John; Andrew FloodWelcome to Public Health Moment from the University of Minnesota. A new study has identified elevated glucose levels in patients as one factor in the recurrence of adenomatous polyps. These are benign polyps that can lead to colorectal cancer. The four-year study followed 715 patients who had had a polyp removed. University of Minnesota epidemiologist Andrew Flood, one of the study’s authors, has more. Because of these results, Flood says that people who have had a polyp removed should carefully regulate their glucose levels. Women with diabetes are 50 percent more likely to suffer colorectal cancer than those who do not have the metabolic disorder. That’s according to a study of 45,000 women led by University of Minnesota epidemiologist Andrew Flood. Although men were not included in this study, Flood says he believes that the results would be very similar. He adds that the dramatic increase in obesity in this country will lead to more cases of type 2 diabetes. With another Public Health Moment, I’m John Finnegan.
