Extension. Extension Center for Community Vitality, 2011) Ahmed, AdeelThe ubiquity of Internet service and the GPS chip, fused into a device that people cannot leave home without (their phone), has facilitated the rise of “Volunteered Geographic Information” (VGI). VGI has a promising premise; locals go where outsiders can’t and are theoretically able to provide highly accurate and useful spatial information. This paper explores one aspect of VGI with the findings from a study of an effort to train volunteers to map “Points of Interest” (POIs) in two Minnesota counties. The findings illustrate that volunteers in rural tourism hubs find the idea of collecting and representing their community’s POIs on interactive digital maps relatively easy and useful for community development and tourism. However, the volunteers’ apparent enthusiasm does not correlate with the amount of data they collected and mapped.Item Measuring Return on Investment of Tourism Marketing: A Review of Sixteen State Tourism Offices(University of Minnesota Extension, 2010) Ahmed, AdeelItem Menahga Business Retention and Expansion Strategies Program: Summary Report(University of Minnesota. Breaking with 95 years of tradition, Minnesota Extension shifted from a county delivery model to a regional/county model. Regionalization, however, is the tip of the iceberg. Several other policies define Minnesota’s new approach, including changes in funding sources, degree of specialization of the regional educators, more statewide program teams, development of business plans and public value statements, supervision of field educators by program specialists rather than geographic supervisors, new scholarship and promotion expectations, and new evaluation efforts. The Minnesota Response describes these policies and reports on their initial impacts on program quality, scholarship, access, and public support. “As land-grant universities seek to rebuild programs based on 'best practices,' this book contributes valuable, experience-based insights into the choices available as Extension programs continue to evolve and respond.” Michael V. Martin, Chancellor of Louisiana State University.Item Otsego Futures Workshop(University of Minnesota. The workshop is a two-hour in person session that is conducted in a computer lab. Participants learn about how digital map and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies are changing advertising by opening new opportunities to target customers. Participants are also introduced to the term “Point of Interest” (POI) that is used to describe a location on a digital map. Participants are then asked to immediately interact with the digital map system by assessing their POI on the major map sites, documenting inaccuracies, and submitting changes to the major data providers. The workshop also addresses strategies that can be used to maximize the freely digital mapping tools for small business and non-profits. The initial evaluations that measure participant knowledge gains show consist self reported increases in knowledge as a result of the workshop. The most common action planned as a result of the workshop was to correct existing information about by a POI. The most recent workshops being conducted support a similar finding for knowledge gains and planned actions.Item Sauk Centre Retail Market Analysis(University of Minnesota, 2016-03) Pesch, Ryan; Ahmed, AdeelItem Sherburne County Futures Workshop(University of Minnesota.
