Abstract

In my 2,600-word review essay "Romano Guardini's 1950 Book The End of the Modern World, Pope Francis' 2015 Eco-Encyclical, and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I highlight the eight times that Pope Francis quotes the Italian-born German Catholic theologian Romano Guardini's prescient and somber 1950 book The End of the Modern World in his widely read and somber 2015 eco-encyclical. In addition, I highlight the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong's discussion of Guardini's 1950 book in German in his 1957 book Frontiers in American Catholicism: Essays on Ideology and Culture.
