Item "Global Competency and International Mindedness in LIS Education"(Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, 2021) Engseth, EllenThis article discusses the role of the global competency framework within library and information studies professional education, explores the relevant literature, and places the framework in context of equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as other relevant areas of the field. The author posits that the knowledges, skills, and attitudes of the global competency framework contribute through international mindedness to equity-centered education within library and information studies.Item Collaboration Across Borders, or Piiride-ülene Koostöö: Estonians and Americans Working Together Towards Accessible Archival Collections(Journal of Library Administration, 2019) Engseth, Ellen; Ramler, GristelA collaborative project to improve global description and thus discovery of library material is shared and analyzed after a decade of activity. The Immigration History Research Center Archives and the National Archives of Estonia work together to arrange and describe archival collections, utilizing the assets of the two different institutions. This project recognizes that the unique research material located in Minnesota holds importance to patrons in many countries, are a result of cultural and informational migration, and that access to this multilingual source material relies on robust description. The author reviews the cultural competency framework, the pertinent literature of archives, library, and information studies (LIS) and beyond, and surveys activity within the archival field. The author also connects cultural competency to archival principles and practice, and offers a call for further research to develop cultural competency within the profession. Cultural competency is offered as a framework for equity, diversity, and inclusion work that is accessible and available to all, and as one that provides a way forward particularly for dominant-culture archivists. Furthermore, archivists can contribute uniquely to the discourse on cultural competency within LIS; this article responds to the call for, and encourages more, discourse with LIS.Item Creating Videos for Reference and Instruction(Archival Practice, 2014-12) Engseth, EllenThe author provides a case study of creating screencasts rendered as videos and disseminated as learning objects to support archival reference and instruction. These videos fit into a broader learning object experience at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) Libraries. The project's context, implementation, and evaluation and recommendations are provided.
