However, it is an important skill for many researchers studying the boreal forest. Researchers can use a dichotomous key or tree identification book to learn species identification. However, these often are state-wide resources and therefore include species that are not common in the northeastern part of the state. This report describes how to identify the common woody species available in northeastern Minnesota in both summer and winter seasons.
