Submitted May, 2012 as a Plan B paper in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a master's degree in English as a Second Language from the University of Minnesota. Many community-based literacy programs use volunteer teachers to increase their capacity. These volunteers have varying levels of training and experience, and have differing motivations for volunteering their time in Adult ESL classes. Strong anecdotal evidence from both volunteers and students suggests that some volunteers may not be prepared to take on the task of teaching grammar. This paper presents the results of a needs assessment conducted with volunteers who teach evening classes in an adult literacy program based in an urban communitybased organization in the Midwest. The purpose was to find out what volunteers need in order to be successful at teaching grammar. In addition, this paper presents curricular suggestions to fill these gaps.en-USAn accessible integrated grammar and competency-based curriculum for volunteer teachers of adult English language learners in a community-based context: A needs assessmentScholarly Text or Essay
