The Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1938, lies on 43,000 acres and serves as a sanctuary and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Its visitor center offers educational slide shows and exhibits concerning the birds native to the area. The Refuge also offers beautiful hiking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing opportunities. The Hamden Slough, another refuge, restores prairie wetlands and grasses.
