Liu, Cong2023-11-282023-11-282023-05https://hdl.handle.net/11299/258795University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. May 2023. Major: Music. Advisor: Alex Lubet. 1 computer file (PDF); ii, 96 pages. In this multimedia music work, I use sound, video, and images to compose a piece divided into six parts. The work describes the changes in my thoughts during the second stage of my life and the stories that occurred during this period. It demonstrates the influence of my childhood and Chinese culture on me, both personally and musically. The work charts my progression from ignorance and disagreement to confusion and hesitation before arriving at a final state of firmness. I combine Chinese national elements and my personal musical style with modern compositional techniques, as well as science and technology. By using video and images to complement the music and tell stories, I aim to convey the intended message to the audience and encourage them to find their own answers. This results in a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary multimedia musical work with an open-ended narrative.enThe Message of Music: Music as Communication in the Multimedia Composition: Reflex 2/3 self-portraitThesis or Dissertation
