As the demographic profile of Carver County changes, the Carver Public Health Department is looking for ways to encourage Latino parents to participate in early childhood screenings. The goal of this project was to identify barriers to participating in such screening, and to develop informational materials to overcome these barriers. Carver County project lead Jennifer Anderson worked with students in SPAN 3404: Medical Spanish and Community Health Services, to assess barriers and develop informational materials in both Spanish and English. The students discovered that lack of resources, language barriers, and cultural differences are the primary barriers to early childhood screenings for Latino children.
