Ong's Thought," I discuss in detail Potter's book Melville's Clarel and the Intersympathy of Creeds. In it, Potter discusses the 1991 edition of Melville's Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land. In addition, I use various aspects of the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955) to critique certain points of Potter's discussion of Melville's Clarel.enMelville, Herman Melville, Clarel, William Potter, Walter J.
