The antique lamp represents the metaphysical sciences; the telescope, the physical sciences; the plow, the industrial arts, and the artist’s palette represents the fine arts. These are the four dimensions of a baccalaureate education. Above and below is the cross of St. George, which for centuries has stood for unselfish service. Each BSN graduate will receive a School of Nursing pin displaying the symbols of this proud heritage. Sincere appreciation is extended to the School of Nursing Alumni Society and the generous donors who contributed to the Nursing Legacy Fund that provided the School of Nursing pins given to the BSN graduates and the University of Minnesota business card holders presented to the DNP and PhD graduates today. Thank you for furthering this proud nursing tradition. The President’s Emerging Scholars program is a four-year opportunity for select undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and characteristics. Graduates are honored with a purple commencement cord. Graduates adorned with multicolored cloth stoles signify their participation with the University of Minnesota Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence and honor their academic achievement. MCAE develops and fosters inclusive, coherent learning for undergraduates at the University of Minnesota through educational support programs, community engagement and cultural activities. Sigma Theta Tau International is the honor society for professional nurses. Criteria for membership include having a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 as well as per- sonal attributes such as creativity, demonstrated leadership potential and potential for contributing to the profession of nursing. Student members of STTI must have the recommendation of at least two nursing faculty members. Graduates are distinguished with a lavender and white cord. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP 34 35 School of Nursing degree candidates may graduate with either Latin Honors (cum, magna or summa cum laude) or with Distinction (Distinction or High Distinction) or both. These citations are provisional and do not become official until all requirements for the award are fulfilled. Latin Honors Designations: Students graduating from the School of Nursing through the University Honors program have taken part in a rigorous course of study, research, scholarship, or other creative work in the major, culminating in an Honors thesis representing independent work done under the direction of a faculty supervisor or mentor. Students graduating cum laude (with Honors) have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 for the last 60 graded credits at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Magna cum laude (with great honor) awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.66 and summa cum laude (with highest honor) awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 in the final 60 graded credits at UMTC. Distinction Designations: Students earn graduation “with Distinction” or “with High Distinction” based on cumulative grade point average at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with at least 60 graded credits completed at the University. Students graduating “with Distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher in University of Minnesota Twin Cities coursework at the time of graduation; students graduating “with High Distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA or 3.90 or higher in University of Minnesota-Twin Cities coursework at the time of graduation. Note: Great care is taken to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in this commencement program; however, there may be unintended errors or changes without notice. This is not an official University of Minnesota graduation list. UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM ACADEMIC DRESS The academic regalia worn today originated in the Middle Ages, when gowns and hoods kept scholars and clerics warm. The distinctive gown served to set the student apart from fellow citizens, giving birth to the expression, “town and gown.” Baccalaureate degree gowns are made of worsted material with pointed sleeves, master’s gowns of silk with long, closed sleeves, and doctoral gowns of silk with longer sleeves, faced with black velvet from hem to neck and back. The doctoral gowns also have three velvet bands around each sleeve above the elbow. Hoods are made of the same materials as the gowns, the length varying with the degree. The colors of the hood’s lining identify the university where the degree was earned; the border indicates the academic discipline. The University of Minnesota shall provide equal access to and opportunity in its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. The University’s mission, carried out on multiple campuses and throughout the state, is threefold: research and discovery, teaching and learning, and outreach and public service. ©2021 Regents of the University of Minnesota.
