Honor Song: Fond du Lac/Lake Vermilion Singers In Anishinaabe culture, the Honor Song is sung to recognize, to honor and to celebrate accomplishments, both individual and group. Today's Honor Song recognizes and celebrates Gekinoo'imaagejig, "The Ones Who Teach," a unique collaboration between UMD and the Fond du Lac Tribal College to educate American Indian students interested in becoming teachers. The program is graduating 11 candidates, including seven American Indians. The program is funded through a grant from the Office of Indian Education, U.S. Department of Education. VI. Presentation of Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin to James Brandenburg IX. Comments James Brandenburg Jim Brandenburg is one of America's premier nature photographers. A Minnesota native, Brandenburg began his award-winning career as a natural history photographer and filmmaker while majoring in studio art at UMD. As a UMD student, Brandenburg traveled with Dr. Art Aufderheide, internationally known paleopathologist from the Duluth Medical School, to the Northwest Territories, where Brandenburg filmed the last group of Canadian Inuit people to live off the land. That trip began Brandenburg' s lifelong journey as a photographer, from his early career as Pictures Editor at the Worthington Daily Globe newspaper in Southern Minnesota to freelancing for National Geographic magazine. In 1978, he became a contract photographer for National Geographic, which resulted in 19 magazine stories, several television features , and more than 19 books. His current projects include two new books about the prairie and wolves. His photographs have won many prestigious national and interna- tional awards. He was twice named "Magazine Photographer of the Year" by the National Press Photographer's Association, as well as "Kodak 3 Wildlife Photographer of the Year" by the Natural History Museum- London and the BBC's Wildlife Magazine. Brandenburg was a Hasselblad Master in 2002, a Nikon Legend behind the Lens in 2001 and is currently one of Canon's prestigious Explorer of Light photographers. In 1991, Brandenburg received the World Achievement Award from the United Nations Environmental Programme in Stockholm, Sweden, in recognition of his using nature photography to raise public awareness for the environment. In 1996, Brandenburg received the UMD Distinguished Alumni Award and delivered the commencement address. Brandenburg and his wife, Judy, have demonstrated a high commitment to conserva- tion and preservation efforts through their support for the Trust for Public Land and Friends of the Boundary Waters. The nonprofit Brandenburg Prairie Foundation was established in 1999 to educate, promote, preserve and expand native prairie in southwestern Minnesota. The Brandenburgs live at "Ravenwood" near Ely, Minn., and have two children and three grandchildren. X. Presentation of Degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin to Harry Oden XI. Comments -Harry Oden Harry Oden is a compassionate educator and humanitarian who has been a tireless advocate for hundreds of students to reach educational goals they never dreamed were possible. He has inspired students across the country to give back to their communities. An Alabama native, Oden grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., where he attended the public schools and excelled as an athlete. On the urging of his high school coach, Oden came to UMD in 1959 to play basketball. While Oden did excel on the court, earning him a spot in the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997, his contributions off the court have had a profound impact on the diversity of the student body at UMD. Oden graduated from UMD in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in History and in 1980 with a Master of Arts Degree in U.S. History/Educational Administration. For 35 years, he worked in the Milwaukee Public Schools in a variety of roles, from a history teacher to assistant principal and principal at several different schools. In addition to working full time in the school district, he put in another 40- 60 hours a week in the community, helping students achieve success at both the secondary level and at many higher education institutions around the country. At UMD, he has personally nurtured hundreds of students to excel, a role he continues today after retirement. His devotion to education and community service inspired the establishment of the UMD Harry Oden Scholarship for minority and disabled students in 1994. More than 125 students have received financial help, many over four years, from the endowed scholarship. In 1990, Oden received the 4 UMD Distinguished Alumni Award and delivered the commencement address. Currently Oden is an educational consultant for various schools districts and is a motivational speaker for several organizations including the YMCA and Boys' and Girls' Club. University of Minnesota System A ward Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates nominated by collegiate units in their quest to identify excellence in graduate education. Dennis Falk, professor of social work, College of Education and Human Service Professions Dennis Falk received a Ph.D., in Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota and taught on the Twin Cities and Morris campuses prior to coming to Duluth. He has primarily taught courses on human behavior and advanced social research in the Master of Social Work Program at UMD for the past 28 years, but has also taught an additional six graduate courses and 12 undergraduate courses during that time. Dr. Falk currently serves as director of the UMD Center for Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies and has been the Principal Investiga- tor for Title IV-E Child Welfare Educational Project contracts that have brought over $8 million to UMD to provide student stipends and educational program- ming and support. Professor Falk's research interests have included instructional technology, domestic violence, global awareness, and the evaluation of education and human service programs, and he has written one book and over 40 articles and reports on these topics. His University service activities include serving as Director of Graduate Studies, Acting Department Head, and Director of the UMD Study in England Program. His community service includes serving on many boards and committees and consulting on the evaluation of over 20 human service agencies. Dr. Falk recognizes that numerous students, staff, faculty, and administrators have contributed to all of his activities at UMD, and he very gratefully acknowledges their support. University of Minnesota Duluth A wards Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award Faculty members who receive this award are honored for their excellence in research, scholarly contributions to their field and for their dedication to student research in education. Barbara Elliott, professor of family medicine, Medical School Duluth 7 Barbara Elliott, Ph.D., is a professor of family medicine at the Medical School Duluth, and faculty associate in the Center for Bioethics. Her education includes degrees from the University of Minnesota, studies in Europe, a Visiting Scholar at the Hastings Center, and a Fellowship with the Kellogg National Leadership Program. She teaches Medical Ethics, and has had continuous research funding since 1984. She has received grants from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HRSA (Maternal Child Health Bureau), National Cancer Institute, the Minnesota Departments of Children, Families and Learning and of Economic Security, the Healthier Minnesota Community Clinics Fund, and local foundations. Elliot's research focuses on social justice issues in health care settings. Currently most of her research evaluates out- comes of access to health care for at-risk youth. These research projects fund a clinic that serves homeless youth in Duluth, and a demonstration project providing health, social welfare and child care to teen-families. Other projects have documented the impact of improving care for those living with family violence, in rural settings, as part of a minority ethnic group, with mental health issues, in poverty, and at life's end. Her publications have gained the attention of the AMA, Institute of Medicine, legislature, and media as they describe needed improvements in our health care system. Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award This honor is given each year to a faculty member who has made contributions to the teaching mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality. Viktor Zhdankin, professor of chemistry, College of Science and Engineering Viktor V. Zhdankin was born in 1956 in Sverdlovsk, Russia. His M.S. (1978), Ph.D. (1981), and Dr.Chem.Sci. (1986) degrees were earned at Moscow State University in the research laboratories of Professor N.S. Zefirov. In 1987 he was appointed as Senior Research Fellow - Head of Research Group at the Department of Chemistry, Moscow State University, in Russia. He moved to the University of Utah in 1990, where he worked for three years as instructor of organic chemistry and Research Associate with Professor P.J. Stang. In 1993 he joined the UMD faculty where he is currently a professor of chemistry. Professor Zhdankin is one of the world's most renowned experts in the organic chemistry of hypervalent main group elements. His research involves the development and application of new reagents for organic synthesis based on polyvalent iodine compounds. He has published over 180 refereed research papers, which are widely cited by organic chemists in many countries. He serves on Editorial Boards of several international journals and is a member of the Japanese Forum on Iodine Utilization. His previous awards include the prestigious national fellowship from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus foundation and the UMD Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Research. 8 Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award This award is given annually to a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Fine Arts who has an exceptional and effective teaching style that emphasizes the worth of research in a learned discipline and the maturing impact scholarly activity has on the development of human attitudes and values. Larry Knopp, professor of geography, College of Liberal Arts Larry Knopp earned a B.A. from the University of Washington and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has been at UMD since 1989. He serves on the graduate faculties of UMD and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and holds adjunct/affiliate appointments at UMTC and the University of Washington. Professor Knopp's scholarly interests coalesce around issues of space and power, particularly in relation to gender, sexuality, race, class, and nation. He has conducted research in North America, Britain, and Australia, and has published in numerous scholarly journals, edited books, and encyclopedia. He has served as book review editor, editorial board member, and manuscript referee for several scholarly journals and books. Dr. Knopp believes strongly in the teaching mission of UMD and in the fusion of teaching and scholarship. He teaches a wide range of courses and modules for the Geography, Urban & Regional Studies, and Master of Liberal Studies programs, and has lectured or led field courses in other departments at UMD and elsewhere. In all of this he strives to demonstrate the value of active, socially relevant scholarship, and to mentor students in the discovery of their own academic, intellectual, and activist capacities. Dr. Knopp plans to use the stipend associated with the Tezla award to establish a new scholarship fund in Geography geared towards enhancing diversity among the department's students. ACADEMIC COSTUMES In the medieval city, it was common to see clothing similar to the clothing worn by commencement participants. The modern academic costume has evolved from the dress of the medieval guilds and the early religious orders. Today, everyone with a college or university degree may wear the black aca- demic gown. Hoods, which are omitted by seniors who are candidates for degrees, are worn by graduates. At the University of Minnesota, the lining of the hood has a maroon chevron on a gold background to represent the University colors. A Univer- sity faculty member who holds a degree from another college or university wears the colors of his/her own school. Distinctions between sleeves indicate the type of degree held by the wearer. A long pointed sleeve indicates a Bachelor's degree, while a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper part of the arm designates a Master's degree. A round, open sleeve marks a Doctor's degree. A Doctor's robe has velvet trimmings on the gown, including crossbars on the sleeve. The trimmings may either be black or may match the color of the hood edging. Candidates for degrees wearing medallions are honor students. The tassel color stands for the field of study of the graduate. School of Business and Economics is drab; College of Education and Human Service Professions may be light blue, gray, sage, or gold; College of Liberal Arts may be white, gold, purple, copper, peacock, pink, citron or brown; School of Fine Arts are brown or pink; and College of Science and Engineering are gold or orange. Academic caps, or mortar-boards, derive their name from the similarity to the top portion of the mortar-board used by a mason. At the University of Paris, teachers placed square, stiff caps on graduates to signify promotion. This type of headgear was adopted later by the masters at Oxford and worn on all occasions to demonstrate their independence. A clue as to why these Oxford faculty members chose the square mortar-board is given in this 1564 poem. "'Tis square like scholars and their books: The rest are round, but this is square To show that they more stable are. " THE MACE The mace, which is carried by the faculty member leading the academic procession, symbolizes leadership and authority. Use of a mace dates back to the 12th century when it was carried by kings' bodyguards. Even in more modern times, the mace has maintained some of its ancient function of keeping order. The doorkeeper of the House of Representatives has a mace for use in formal House activities. The mace carried in UMD's commencement procession has a glass sphere topped by the North Star - a symbol of the state of Minnesota. It also has a seal of the University set in the handle. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming. Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thru ' the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? "HAIL! MINNESOTA" Minnesota, Hail to thee! Hail to thee, our College dear! Thy light shall ever be A beacon bright and clear; Thy sons and daughters true Will proclaim thee near and far; They will guard thy fame And adore thy name; Thou shalt be their Northern Star. Like the stream that bends to sea, Like the pine that seeks the blue! Minnesota, still for thee Sons and daughters strong and true; From thy woods and waters fair From thy prairies waving far, At thy call they throng With their shout and song. Hailing thee their Northern Star.
