As a courtesy to the graduates and other guests, we ask that all guests remain in their seats and not enter the arena 
floor area to ensure a quick flow of graduates during the ceremony. Graduates should return to their seats after 
crossing the stage. Degrees are conferred at the end of the commencement ceremony. Please refrain from talking 
during the ceremony.

HONORS AND DISTINCTION DESIGNATIONS 
College of Science and Engineering degree candidates may graduate with either Latin Honors (cum laude, magna 
cum laude, or summa cum laude) or with distinction (distinction or high distinction) or both. Honors citations are 
provisional and do not become official until all requirements for the award indicated are fulfilled
Latin Honors Awards: Cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude graduates complete honors requirements, 
including research leading to an honors thesis project in their major. Students graduating cum laude have a minimum 
cumulative GPA of 3.50 for the last 60 graded credits at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities (UMTC). Magna 
cum laude awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.66 and summa cum laude awards require a minimum 
cumulative GPA of 3.75 on the final 60 graded credits at UMTC.
Degrees with Distinction: Students earn graduation “with distinction” or “with high distinction” based on cumulative 
grade point average at UMTC with at least 60 graded credits completed at UMTC. Students graduating “with 
distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation; 
students graduating “with high distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher in UMTC coursework 
at the time of graduation. Gold honor cords are worn by students who are graduating with distinction, and maroon 
and gold honor cords are for those students graduating with high distinction.
HISTORY OF TASSEL COLOR 
In the late 19th century the Intercollegiate Commission adopted a code of academic dress. Tassel colors chosen 
had traditional meanings. Science and engineering were given golden yellow and orange to signify the wealth of 
knowledge produced by research.

essential to the education of the students whose accomplishments we celebrate this evening. Members of

A retired eight-time serial entrepreneur-turned-educator-and-
author, Steve Blank has changed how startups are built and how 
entrepreneurship is taught around the globe. He authored the 
bestselling The Startup Owner’s Manual and The Four Steps to the 
Epiphany, credited with launching the Lean Startup movement. 
His May 2013 Harvard Business Review article on the Lean Startup 
defined the movement.
Blank is widely recognized as a thought leader on startups and 
innovation. His blog, www.steveblank.com, and books redefined 
how to build successful startups are considered required reading among entrepreneurs, investors and 
established companies worldwide.
His Lean LaunchPad class at Stanford, Berkeley and Columbia redefined how entrepreneurship is taught, 
and his Innovation Corps class for the National Science Foundation forever changed how the nation’s top 
scientists and engineers take their ideas out of the university lab and into the commercial marketplace. His 
articles regularly appear in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Huffington Post.
More than 100,000 people have signed up for Blank’s free online version of Lean LaunchPad through 
Udacity.com. The class is also the centerpiece of the Startup Weekend NEXT global entrepreneurship 
training program.
Blank earned the Stanford University Undergraduate Teaching Award in Management Science and 
Engineering in 2009. In 2010, he earned the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley 
Haas School of Business. The San Jose Mercury News named him one of Silicon Valley’s 10 Influencers. 
Harvard Business Review named him one of 12 Masters of Innovation.
About the Speaker
SCOTT PALMER
A native of Dallas, Texas, Scott Palmer is a summa cum laude graduate with a 
Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. Scott is also graduating with a Bachelor of 
Science in Business from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management 
with a major in Finance. As part of the University Honors Program, Scott completed 
his thesis on the comparison of thermochemical approaches for solar-driven carbon 
dioxide capture under the guidance of mechanical engineering assistant professor 
Wojciech Lipiński. Scott also dedicated much of his time at the University in both 
the Office of Admissions as an admissions counselor intern and in various leadership 
roles in his fraternity—Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Scott spent his first summer in Minnesota interning as a financial analyst at Wells Fargo. This past summer, 
Scott interned with Flint Hills Resources at the Pine Bend Oil Refinery in Rosemount, MN, where he 
accepted a full-time offer as a maintenance engineer. In the future, Scott hopes to combine his finance and 
mechanical engineering backgrounds as an entrepreneur in the energy and aviation industries.

1 Participate in the University of Minnesota alumni groups. Take advantage of your  free one-year membership in the University of Minnesota Alumni Association and the CSE Alumni 
Society. Join the newly formed CSE Young Alumni Board. Watch for a mailing this summer.
