UMD VS. COLLEGE OF ST. SCHOLASTICA Wednesday, December 7 7:30 P.M. UMD bulldogs 1983-84 GEORGE FISHER Head Coach Under the expert guidance of George Fisher, the UMD basketball program has reached a level of prominence virtually unmatched by any small college in the Upper Midwest. Now entering his sixth season as the Bulldog head man, Fisher has posted an overall record of 96-44 since taking the coaching reins in 1978 and an incredible 69-17 mark the past three seasons. His career winning percentage of .686 at UMD places him first among all Bulldog basketball coaches in that department. Fisher, who was selected the 1983 NAIA District 13 Coach of the Year, has directed the Bulldogs to two straight Northern Intercollegiate Conference titles and three con secutive District 13 playoff appearances. Fisher came to UMD after a two-year stint at Northland College of Ashland, Wisconsin, where he led the Lumberjacks to a 17-12 record in 1977-78 and a berth in the NAIA District 13 playoffs. A 1974 graduate of Manhattan College in New York, Fisher received his first taste of college coaching as a graduate assistant at Denver University where he earned his master's degree in 1975. That fall, Fisher moved on to Rapid City, South Dakota, and landed his first head coaching job at the National School of Business where he stayed one year before packing his bags for Ashland. Fisher, who is also a physical education instructor at UMD, has found equal success as the Bulldog golf coach, leading UMD to a pair of NIC crowns and at least one national tournament appearance in each of his five years. Fisher and his wife, Christi, a teaching specialist in the Communicative Disorders Department at UMD, have two children - Jenny, 6, and Beth, 3. But for one member of the Bulldog basketball clan, a triumph at the expense of the Saints would take on a somewhat special meaning. Bulldog Head Coach George Fisher will be looking to chalk up his 100th win at UMD when his team takes the floor with St. Scholastica. If the Bulldogs succeed on the scoreboard, Fisher will become only the third coach in school history to reach the century win mark. But perhaps even more remarkable is the fact that if Fisher does crack the 100-victory barrier tonight, he will have done so in a shorter time period than either of his two predessors. The legendary Lloyd Peterson (1931-43), the first to reach the 100-win plateau, waited until the last of his 12 seasons as the Bulldog head man before surpassing 100 victories. Norm Olson, who occupied the UMD coaching chair from 1954 to 1969, notched his 100th win on the opening day of the 1960-61 season, just over six years after taking the Bulldog reins. Fisher, with a Bulldog victory this evening, will have conquered the 100-win milestone in a little over five years. In terms of games needed to reach 100 triumphs, however, Olson holds the upperhand. The Bulldogs’ all-time coaching leader (229 career victories) got his 100th triumph after only 143 games while Fisher, again with a win against St. Scholastica, will have need ed 145 contests. Bulldog Spotlight — Chris Neumann If one were to use a single word to describe senior co-captain and current UMD scoring leader Chris Neumann, “durable” would be an awfully good choice. Neumann, you see, has become somewhat of an iron man in his three-plus seasons with the Bulldogs. Going into tonight’s game, the two-time AII-NIC selection has started 90 straight games since coming to Duiuth in 1980. If he stays healthy, Neumann, a native of Milwaukee, will become the first Bulldog in over a decade to get the starting nod in every game for four consecutive years. Kuronen came to UMD in the fall of 1977 after concluding a brilliant athletic career at Two Harbors High School where he was a standout in basketball, baseball, football and track. While at UMD, Kuronen played one year of junior varsity basketball before ascending into the student coaching ranks as a sophomore. He was graduated from UMD in May 1982 with a degree in physical education and worked in a sporting goods store in Chicago before returning to his alma mater this fall. In addition to assisting Fisher with the day-to-day duties, Kuronen is also responsible for direc ting the Bulldog junior varsity program.
